Description

This revised edition student book provides straightforward and engaging instruction with original examples and plenty of space to practice this writing skill. The 12 lessons utilize fables, historical narratives, and legends–all which focus on confronting or defending parts of an author’s narrative. Students will engage and analyze the written models and then create their own. Students will build upon skills taught in previous levels as well as learn to create four-paragraph essays, outlines, comparison and contrast, using quotes to support an argument, revising, and more. This new edition has updated chapters 5, 7, and 8 with new stories, exercises, and illustrations. Chapter 5 highlights different selections which use the refutation technique (from the speech, “Give Me Liberty or Give me Death”). To teach refutation, Lesson 7 adapts a West African folk lore story involving a tortoise, a hippopotamus, and an elephant. In Lesson 8 (the first confirmation story), a tortoise proves he’s the equal to an elephant and a hippo. With these significant changes, this new edition will not align with the previous edition. 291 pgs, pb. ~ Ruth

This 12-lesson study utilizes fables, historical narratives, and legends from various cultures to teach the Refutation/Confirmation stage of the Progymnasmata. Continuing to build on previous skills of narrative, descriptive and persuasive writing, this one-semester course from Classical Academic Press moves toward persuasive writing, in written and oral forms.

Why did you choose this?

This writing series has been more engaging and my little writers are becoming more confident and less resistant to writing time. So, when my daughter was ready for the 5th book, I did not hesitate.

It is a co-op requirement for a middle school writing class. Teacher assures approach effectively generates analytical thinking in children - a very good preparation for later high school study.

I chose this writing curriculum because I used the first level in the series and liked it.

Great curriculum that teaches good writing skills.
