Saxon Math Curriculum
Saxon Math helps kids feel confident in math instead of feeling overwhelmed. Math is introduced in an incremental way as new concepts are presented in small steps daily. Learning is also spiraled as topics are continuously revisited to provide review and repetition. Saxon can take a student all the way from primary math to calculus and physics.
Saxon Math Features:
• New concepts presented in small increments
• Provides continual review and repetition
• Easy to use even for the non-math parent
• Math fact drills help create math automaticity
Saxon Math Homeschool Placement Tests:
Homeschool Edition
Saxon Math Primary (Grades K-3)
User-friendly math program with scripted lessons for the teacher. Manipulatives are used heavily throughout the primary grades. Homeschool kits include a teacher manual, meeting book, and student workbooks (grade K does not include workbooks). Manipulatives are sold separately.
Primary Features:
• Well organized program and easy to teach
• Manipulatives are an integral part of program and help accelerate understanding of abstract concepts
• Lessons are incremental and concepts continually reviewed
Saxon Math Middle School (Grades 4-8)
Middle school students transition from manipulatives and worksheets to a textbook approach. Students are introduced to concepts in smaller parts making them easier to grasp while reviewing previously learned concepts. Instruction is written directly in the student text. Mental math, problem solving, and math facts are practiced daily. Homeschool kits include student textbook, tests and worksheets, and solutions manual. Optional video tutorials are also available for extra support in learning the new concepts.
Middle School Features:
• Students become confident in math basics and problem solving
• Teaching multiple strands at same time while reviewing helps concepts stick
• Works well in a homeschool environment
Saxon Math High School (Grades 9-12)
Saxon high school courses teach the fundamental aspects of problem solving and prepare students for college math. Courses include Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Advanced Mathematics, Calculus, and Physics. Geometry is integrated within Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Advanced Mathematics.
High School Features:
• Incorporates an incremental, spiral approach
• Video tutorials provide support in learning new concepts
• Review problems include the lesson number the concept was first introduced
Classroom Edition
Saxon Math Intermediate (Grades 3-5)
The Intermediate Series is often called the classroom edition because it is closely related to Common Core standards and goes into more detail with the 4-step problem-solving process. The methodology still maintains the incremental, spiral approach and the scope and sequence is largely the same as the homeschool edition. However, the layout and authors are different. Homeschool kit includes student text, solutions manual, power up workbooks, and testing book.
Intermediate Features:
• Develops problem solving and mathematical thinking
• Helps students become proficient in math facts
• Video tutorials are available
Saxon Math Courses 1, 2, 3 (Grades 6-8)
Courses 1, 2, and 3 are typically for grades 6-8. Students using the Intermediate series for grades 3-5 may continue with these courses to prepare for algebra. Although maintaining the Saxon incremental methodology, the content and format is slightly different. Components available include the Student Textbook, Power Up Workbook, Course Assessments, and Solutions Manual.
Courses 1, 2, 3 Features:
• Each lesson includes fact practice, mental math, and problem-solving exercises
• Real-life application problems, students connect math to everyday life
• Video tutorials are available
Saxon Math Classroom High School (Grades 9-11)
The classroom edition for high school was written by different authors. Geometry has been removed from the Saxon Algebra 4th edition books. A separate geometry course is offered. Kits include the student text, solutions manual, and test booklet.
Classroom High School Features:
• Same methodology as homeschool edition with incremental learning and continual review
• Works well for students who desire a separate geometry course
• Video tutorials available for extra support
