Students develop necessary skills for
reading as they incrementally learn the 44 basic sounds and their symbols,
which make up 85% of the English language. This process of decoding lays a
solid reading foundation, allowing students to approach any new word through
the sound system. All books encourage Christian values and are illustrated with
cute, black-and-white, farm-inspired drawings. Learning Through Sounds
Workbooks 1 and 2provide phonics instruction along with
the required teacher manual—for thorough implementation of daily lessons,
including games and activities. (The Learning Through SoundsPractice
Workbook is perfect for students who’ve finished workbooks 1 and 2 and need
additional practice, or as review when bridging into 2nd grade). The
Helping Yourself Workbook can be used alongside Learning
Through Sounds Workbook 1 and provides activity pages (cut-and-paste type)
for each letter of the alphabet. Each reader is hardcover and has a correlating
workbook (2 pages of exercises per story) and teacher manual, done in the
following sequence: Before We Read, First Steps, Days
Go By, and More Days Go By. Teacher manuals show copies
of textbook and workbook pages with answers filled in and contain detailed
instructions for teaching.
Solid and Simple - as well as cost efficient program
We have used this set (and subsequent grades) for 3 previous children. It is now back in use for our fourth ! He truly enjoys the stories and the scope and sequence has helped him become a confident reader. There are no "frills" or todays worldy opinions in the materials, which is so nice - these are real children books that promote healthy happy practices as he navigates through his growing up. We don not follow all the suggestions and busy practice work, only when we notice he needs some extra help in an area. Our eldest son called asking for helps with his own daughter in her early reading adventures, so we purchased a set for her as well - hopefully she enjoys them and has the successes we have experienced! Adding the Climbing to Good English and Learning Through Sounds does make a great well rounded First Grade reading program. Just a side note - these are written towards the lifestyle of the farm life and that is exactly what we have, however some of the terms may need further explanation for children that are not surrounded by fields, animals and gardens -

I was able to look at a few of these readers in person and I believe they are going to fit my son better than a lot of other readers out there!

I have used Pathway Readers in the past successfully.

It looks interesting and it's a complete curriculum.

Does this start at the beginning and teach the child to read?
Not grade 1. My child was already a beginner reader when we started. I believe they have a set before Grade 1, Ii know of people who have tas8ght with that set. I and my children love the series. It teaches about farm life (which we live) and personal and family correct interaction, kindness, understanding and love. How to get along with siblings, why you shouldn't lie etc, sharing possessions and how to have a happy family by making other people happy.. Good work ethic. Hope you purchase the series just start on the basic level. Teaches phonics etc. Good luck finding what you need

Why doesn't the teacher edition come with First Steps? Do I need it to get started?
Jamie G
The teacher edition for First Steps is in a book that also includes the teacher edition for Before We Read. That teacher edition is included with the Pre-Reading package and I assume there was concern that it would be a duplicate for people purchasing this package who had also purchased the Pre-Reading package. Here is the link to the teacher edition:
