Publisher's Description of Plaid Phonics Student Level K (2011 Edition)
MCP Phonics Level K develops alphabetic and Phonemic awareness, phonics, and oral langauge skills youngsters need. Letters and sounds are introduced through a consistent six-page lesson sequence, which includes letter recognition, writing the letter, phonemic awareness, sound-symbol correspondence, and a Picture Dictonary page. An array of multisensory teaching options address different learning styles.
Back in the day, Plaid Phonics was known as MCP Plaid Phonics, a very
solid series of phonetic and word study skills. Instruction moves from letter
recognition in the K level, to alphabetizing, syllabication, and dictionary
skills in the upper levels. Built-in review of previously learned skills within the books helps student master concepts. They also contain some pages in
“standardized test format,” so you get a little test preparation as a bonus.
There is considerable overlap between levels, allowing you to jump in anywhere
in the program.
At each level, there is a consumable Student Workbookand a
Teacher Resource Book. Student Workbooks are in full-color and include
basic instructions on each page. Units are broken down into lessons with the
suggestion of completing 3-6 lessons per week. Although you can use the workbooks
as stand-alone supplementation and reinforcement, the Teacher Resource Guides
contain complete teaching information to use this as a phonics program. Teacher
Resource Guides are spiral-bound and include: pre-tests and post-tests,
lesson plans, teaching information, suggested activities, and noted
cross-curriculum connections. Homeschool Bundles include both the
student and teacher’s edition.
Easy order process, prompt delivery and good quality product at a good price.

This workbook will probably disappoint you if you use it with an actual kindergartener. Its very basic. However, its great for a four year old, with adapatation. Ive used previous edition of this book with my older children, and Im disappointed with the amount of activities in this book which are simply writing letters (like a handwriting book) vs actual phonics activities (such as circle all the pictures that start with the sound of b.) However its still a useful book, and full of colorful pictures.
If you have a kindergarten student who is 5 years old and who is already familiar with letter sounds, get the level A book. Youll be glad you did!
That said, this book is full of colorful pictures. It has lots of pages, so you can skip anything that seems to repetitive. It is a great resource for anyone who needs written work for a kindergartener to show a state reviewer or for a young child who needs something to do while his older siblings are working.

Basic
These phonics books are pretty basic with a lot of repetitive practice of letter sounds and letter writing practice.

Plaid Phonics
Plaid Phonics has some excellent components. However, they tend to jump fairly quickly from one phonics concept to another without having introduced the concept. This approach tends to be more like the "Whole Language" approach as opposed to synthetic phonics. I would like to see a step by step phonics approach in their books.

Excellent course
Every year the teachers ask to make sure this book is on the list. The children like working with the pictures so colorful and real. Makes learning fun!

Is the teacher guide required?
Mackenzie F
Not required at all especially if you have experience teaching phonics; directions are written on each page to the teacher/parent. However, if you have little or no actual teaching experience, the teacher guide serves as an invaluable resource.
