Art: The Definitive Visual Guide
When you take in the 600+ page count, the large trim size, and the glossy, full-color pages packed with gorgeous art reproductions, I feel that the price on this "coffee-table-quality" art book is extremely reasonable. After an opening chapter on looking at art and understanding basic art concepts (subject and composition, light and shade, etc.), the rest of the chapters progress chronologically from prehistory to the present day. Within each chapter specific geographical areas, cultures or artistic movements are covered. Most chapters focus on a group of artists that represent that time period or style, each with a short biography or biographical information and examples of their artwork. Often there are "closer looks" where the reader is invited to zoom in on a particular segment of a painting to appreciate a technique or a special feature. Occasionally, a themed page with a black background features a collection of works by different artists based around a similar subject, such as children or work. Like other DK books, the pages are packed with captioned full-color art reproductions. It's easy to believe that over 2,500 works are featured in this hefty volume! The art reproductions vary widely in size; some of them are page-size, while others take up only a few inches of space. Whether you use this as an art reference or a coffee table book, it's almost irresistible to browse. This has been a popular book around our office as well; its visual appeal is undeniable! One important note: although the book is an excellent reference, it is not geared specifically for children. There are plenty of nudes and partial nudes throughout the book. You will want to "edit" with sticky notes or selectively preview which pages you use with your children depending on their ages and your own family preferences. 612 pages, hc. - Jess
Discover the history of art movements from classical Greek art to the Italian Renaissance, the pre-raphaelites, and the masters of impressionism with this bestselling DK visual guide.
Truly comprehensive in scope, this bestselling book explores masterpieces by more than 700 artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso, and Van Gogh. An invaluable art lover's reference book, it showcases everything from Italian baroque painting and African Art to contemporary art history.
Each artistic movement is clearly explained, with descriptions_1 of origins and influences, characteristic styles and techniques, and typical subjects. A visual timeline of key works gives an overview of the scope of each major movement.
Bold graphics, overlays, and detailed closeups show you how to "read composition and subject matter, and explain the techniques and methods the artists used to create their masterpieces.
Just so you know - I'm not particularly an art person. However, I do like to understand the interrelationships between historical events and culture. This book bridges an amazing gap - historical events and art history. Designed to be a brief survey of art (from 1830 to 1970) it functions as an art history, an art appreciation, and an art techniques (doing art) course. Not to mention the insights it provides into the people and places covered in the history course. This not-particularly-an-art-person is totally impressed!
Each of the 16 lessons covers an art history period - romanticism through psychedelic art and tie dye - with impressionism, expressionism, modernism, and surrealism among others in between. Each lesson starts with an overview of the history and art of the time period. The succinct coverage is augmented by suggested web links/books/videos but there are also full-color reproductions (in various sizes) of period works included in the book. Sidebar information includes research questions and learning objectives rounding out the instruction. The lesson then moves into the doing art portion with clearly stated assignments, lists of needed supplies, student and author examples, and step-by-step illustrations. For instance, Lesson 5 is Art Nouveau and Symbolism (an ism I missed earlier) which is coordinated with the BF lessons on The Jungle and teaches us that Art Nouveau was an attempt to apply a new look to all of the applied arts while Symbolism was dramatically different - artists defining their art with dramatic emotions rather than story telling. Among the developments of the period; posters became a fine art medium for the first time. The activity for this lesson is designing a decorative initial in the Art Nouveau style.
Help is available for the young artist (and/or his teacher). The KnoodleU.com website (book purchaser is entitled to access) contains tutorials, resources, and tips to help with the assignments. Use of the DK book, Art, is suggested to augment the lessons and provide additional visuals (there's some nudity in the DK book and the author addresses this question helpfully and cautiously). A very helpful timeline that includes world events, art events, art projects and the BF book list is provided.
Easily a stand-alone art class – or more by just adding the BF books as read alongs, this a perfect complement to the entire Beautiful Feet course and will provide the student with an excellently rounded-out history/humanities course. 65 pgs, spiral-bound ~ Janice
