Old Town in the Green Groves: Laura Ingalls W
Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote nine Little House books about her childhood growing up on the western frontier, but there are two years she did not write about. These two years fall between On the Banks of Plum Creek and By the Shores of Silver Lake. This book attempts to fill that gap by sharing the events in Laura's life during this time, trying to describe it with a similar style to her original books. It tells about the time her family spent in Iowa after grasshoppers ruin the family crops. The family leaves Plum Creek and moves to Burr Oak, Iowa where they experience small town life and help manage a hotel. It was during these years that Laura gained and then lost a brother and her mother became deathly ill. This book is not included in the Little House boxed sets.
Based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s unpublished memoirs, Old Town in the Green Groves continues the classic American pioneer saga from the award-winning Little House series. This middle grade novel is an excellent choice for tween readers in grades 5 to 6, especially during homeschooling. It’s a fun way to keep your child entertained and engaged while not in the classroom.
For the first time since they left the Big Woods of Wisconsin, the Ingalls family is halted in their westward trek when Pa is forced to find work in a hotel in Burr Oak, Iowa. If they can save enough money, they'll continue searching for a new place to call home.

Several of the original (black-and-white) Little House books have been reformatted, and now feature life-like covers. Unfortunately, these editions do not include Garth William's charming illustrations. Thankfully, the books are once again being republished with the illustrations. At this time, all of the have been reprinted, again with illustrations and full-color illustrated covers.
