Horizons math - a thorough and methodical approach to basic math skills.
I used Horizons Math with my children and chose again for my grandchildren. The two page spread in the early years is perfect. The introduction of new skills is methodical and gentle with plenty of review throughout the year. A very solid program!

Great Math Book for Second Graders
We like the Second Grade Math book. I feel like it was an easy transition for my son coming from the First Grade Math Book. He rarely has any questions about his work but when he does after I show him the first time, he usually grasps the concept.

FINALLY GETTING SOMEWHERE!
After struggling through our first 6 months of homeschooling with frustrating online math (Common Core with no explanations!) and Saxon Math (not quite fast-paced enough), we finally turned to Horizons. Not only are we making progress, there have been many days when DD has said "I'm going to go ahead and do an extra lesson." What?! We really love the look and the format. The Teacher's Guide is actually helpful and the manipulatives are actually helpful and can be used for more than just one year. My only problem with it is that it stops at around 6th or 7th grade with Algebra. Fingers crossed that they will continue this series!

AOP math
My son loves Horizons colorful prints. I like that they don't bore the kids with repetition. It teaches, you have problems and move on. It doesn't completely move on though. The problems keep popping in here and there.

Horizons Math helps my young ones to understand basic math, even though their foundations were poorly set in the past. Each concept is carefully taught, reviewed often, and this is done in a way that is interesting and fun. The books are colorful, and the work does not advance too fast for little ones, nor does it drag. These work for child after child, and I have used them for 6 children so far with no issues. I have not needed to find a different method for any of them!

My kids love Horizons!
Not only do my kids love it, but I love Horizons Math as well! We've been using it for several years now. It's colorful and keeps the kids interested. There's not so much work that they get bored but just enough repetition to make sure they learn each new process. This is typically advanced over public school math, so if your student is coming from public school you may want to test him to see his level before purchasing.

After starting to home school this last January the "approved" curriculum list was overwhelming I did my best and HATED the books they "recommended" So I read some reviews and settled on this book in both the 2nd grade and 6th grade version We LOVE LOVE LOVE them! Well worth the money and the instructions for the kids are easy to understand and they teach with color pictures If you have a student that learns well by reading a concept then given examples to solve the problem before being set free to solve on their own this series is very highly recommended

Horizons is a great math program It is interesting and colorful It includes plenty of drill and some mental math It is affordable and great for fast learners However because I don't like rushing my children along there is a very simple fix to make Horizons work without stressing the child out I just use it one half grade level lower For example my 2nd grader is using grade 2-book 1 the second half of the year In 3rd grade she will use 2-book 2 and 3-book 1 In this way the program is more developmentally appropriate while being on par for standardized testing and still moving quickly enough to be interesting and challenging

Why did you choose this?

We love Horizons! We continue to used what has worked after switching from multiple curriculums to find the right one!

I have used Horizons Math for all of my 5 kids in their early years. It's easy to teach, the lessons aren't too long, and it seems to help my kids succeed in math. My youngest son is begging me to…

My second grader did great with grade 1 Horizons math.

I want to try something more challenging for my son and this curriculum looks promising.

Do you need the teacher guide? We used the grade 1 and we never even cracked open the book

We didn't use the teacher's guide. We really used this book as more of a math practice workbook (rather than a curriculum with lessons taught by mom). I would just sit down with my son and go over the page for the day to make sure he understood it all and then let him do it. I would pull out manipulatives as I saw fit or explain concepts as needed, but I didn't use the teacher's guide or teach any math lessons. Plus, the math at this level is still simple enough that you can figure it in your head and don't need an answer key.
