Description
Betsy Balcombe was a real person, and this fictional story is based on her memoirs. As a precocious teen, her British family ends up housing the former Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte of France after the war. They are on the faraway island of St. Helena and the two become pals of sorts, which seems both peculiar and compelling. I did like the humanizing of Napoleon (aka Boney) as we tend to hear only the worst of his life story. As a story of the period, you read about slaves and soldiers, ships and taverns – but the friendship between Betsy and Napoleon is the heart of the story. For context, you might read about the battle of Waterloo (Belgium) between Bonaparte and Wellington in 1815. If you have studied some French, you will enjoy this tale all the more! I read some reviews about the girl being “too modern" and wanted to see for myself. As a former high school French teacher, I was familiar with the time period. Normally, we would not read an entire novel to write about it, but I did here. The story is absolutely charming all the way through. I give it two thumbs up for the extremely satisfying last page! ~Sara
