Short Story: Understanding, Analysis, and Appreciation
Understanding, appreciating, and analyzing short stories is the goal of this book. You can use this book to add a short story component to your language arts or high school English credit. This is not a high school credit on its own, but it would be a good thing to include as part of high school ELA. You could use this one book all through 4 years of high school; just divide it into four parts. Include composition instruction (if needed), and perhaps use literature guides to read a novel per quarter and you are good for a solid credit. The lessons are very straight forward and easy to teach from. You will read a passage in the book, then respond to questions and extended writing assignments. Instructions are very simple and clear. Your student will learn and use a variety of literary devices: mood, simile, symbolism, conflict, setting, viewpoint, plot sequence, inference, theme, character analysis, imaging and style, message, reaching conclusions, foreshadowing and more! Only certain pages are reproducible. ~Sara
Highlighted by reproducible excerpts from short stories and numerous handouts, this teaching resource provides challenging lessons to introduce major elements in fiction and develop critical reading skills. Students study an author's effective use of plot, character, theme, point of view, symbolism, and imagery. The stories, by such writers as Eugenia Collier, Liam O'Flaherty, James Hurst, and Toni Cade Bambara, were selected to appeal to the interests of adolescent students.
