Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas
This story is a favorite Christmas tradition in our home, and my father always gets tears in his eyes when the film version of this charming tale plays. Times are tough for all the critters in Frogtown Hollow, with scant money to go around and folks being put out of work every day. Emmet Otter and his Ma have very little – even less since Pa passed away – and just manage to eke out a meager living by washing laundry and taking odd jobs. Despite the shabby conditions on the outside, the Otter home is filled with love on the inside. Emmet and Ma work hard for one another, play together, and sing together every day. Still, Christmas is coming, and though it's a pipe dream, Emmet and Ma each long to give each other a proper Christmas gift just once. As each is worrying how they can afford to give such a luxury, the opportunity presents in the form of a local talent show which will award a handsome cash prize. Each separately enters the contest without the other knowing – but to get the materials to enter, they have to give up their only means of livelihood. Will Emmet or Ma win and be able to give each other a gift? This is truly a classic Christmas story, illustrated with vintage crayon illustrations, that will enrich your heart and soul.
Celebrate Christmas this year with the inspiration for the beloved Jim Henson film — back in print after over 40 years!
In 1977, when Jim Henson debuted the now-classic film Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, few knew it was based on a story written and illustrated by Russell and Lillian Hoban, creators of Bread and Jam for Frances and other treasured children's books. With an enduring score by the great Paul Williams, the movie remains a holiday tradition in homes across America. Now the book that started it all is back in print, in a beautiful gift edition that will thrill Muppets fans young and old.
Inspired by the classic tale "The Gift of the Magi," the story begins in a poor country cottage, as Emmet Otter dreams of buying Ma a piano for Christmas, while Ma dreams of buying Emmet a guitar. When a village talent contest is announced, both imagine their dreams coming true. But what they don't imagine finding is their real reward – the power of love, family, and hope in hard times.
