Description

By focusing on three critical features of words – their sound, spelling, and meaning, young students will begin to see similarities and differences in words with the goal of mastering reading and writing in this curriculum. The heart of the program is a hands-on activity called sort, grouping words or pictures that represent sounds into specific categories. This task is done through teacher-directed instruction and independent work for additional practice. The package includes eight consumable Word Study Notebooks, an Implementation Guide, Teacher Resource Guide, and a 6-year access to the Realize Digital Package. The colorful Word Study Notebooks contain a four-page lesson for each sorting activity, including picture and/or word cards for students to cut out, and a grid for students to sort and glue the cards. The Implementation Guide gives a quick overview about how to implement and manage the program. The Teacher Resource Guide provides comprehensive instruction and support to teach each sort or lesson in every notebook. The Digital Package contains the Big Book of Rhymes (poems with engaging illustrations), Interactive Sorts, writing sorts, word hunts, sorting games, and the Classroom Library. A card is included with the curriculum including instructions on accessing the online digital components.

The implementation guide is your starting point. This will explain the program and give you instruction on placement, pacing, and how to get started. Each lesson or sort should take about 15-20 minutes a day. Day one begins with a rhyme or poem to introduce the pattern and sort. Students practice sorting words on day two, and on day three they connect this skill to a writing activity. On day four, a short story is read and students hunt for words and patterns while reading. Day five concludes with an engaging word game. Overall, this newly revised curriculum is a complete word study program providing effective supplement

Why did you choose this?

Hoping to use it in a combined Grade 1/2 classroom

It came highly recommended from another homeschool mom!

I have heard a lot of positive comments about the program and I have been using their assessments for years. Ready to implement the program in my classroom.

I am learning about Words Their Way in my college course and I want to start teaching the curriculum, in my small groups.

I now have access to Savvas realize, but I cannot find the big book of rhymes anywhere, except for 2 of the rhymes. Also, things are not properly labeled, it tells me the sort number but not from what level. What am I doing wrong?

This is the first I have heard of this being an issue. If you have not yet been successful accessing the content, please email consultants@rainbowresource.com and we can look into this with the publisher for you.

Can "Words Their Way Classroom K-5" be used effectively without the digital aspect? I would prefer as little digital use as possible in our homeschool?

Yes, we use the physical workbooks only and do not use anything digital. I highly recommend these workbooks. My kids enjoy them and they are amazing for word study.

Does this set come with a tool for assessing the child?

There are instructions for formative assessment to being the word study, as well as spell checks for each sort and progress monitoring spell checks that are assigned throughout the curriculum.
The teacher resource guide has the pacing for the progress monitoring spell checks, as well as instructions for assessing after each word sort.

I only need to purchase the word study notebook for 3rd-5th grade because we used your K, A and B levels from your discontinued material. Can I purchase these separately? I did not see them offered on Amazon. Thank you.

Sorry, we only offer this in the big set.

Is there a way to buy extra Word Study Notebooks so the program can be used with more than one child?

I have found some of the notebooks for sale, but they are difficult to come by, and I have not been able to locate a full set, without the teacher resource. My recommendation is to create copies of the workbooks and keep the workbooks themselves unmarked for future use.

Hi, where do I find the classroom library to go with this program?

The classroom library is on the Savvas Realize digital access that comes along with the bundle. Once you have digital access please go to the Table of Contents, from there if you scroll all the way down you will see a tab that says, "Classroom Library".
