Slime King - Chemistry (Makers Make It Work)
Leo is the king of slime. He even has his own slime-making business! His parents just ask him to keep up his grades. The only problem? Science class! Tying into the popular Makers Movement, Makers Make It Work is a series of fun easy-to-read stories that focus on problem-solving and hands-on action. This charming story explores the Makers theme of Chemistry and includes explanatory sidebars and a slime-related activity for young makers to try themselves!
This is a series of charming little stories that feature a science connection. Readers will find relatable characters in familiar situations, such as being paired with someone you did not choose (or particularly like) for a science assignment, only to discover you make a good pair despite your differences (Rockets book). Along the way, science vocabulary terms appear in context, e.g. slime is a non-Newtonian fluid. Leo didn't realize he was using chemistry when making his slime concoctions to sell to friends (Slime book). These little readers draw attention to social-emotional learning, as the characters learn to handle uncomfortable situations. This is a fun way to introduce science to young readers who may not yet be engaged in a formal science study. The series is also great for kids who just love science! The colorful illustrations are delightful. Each book includes a project to try and a couple of discussion questions to dig a little deeper. ~Sara
