I remember reading this in middle school in the 1980s and I bet many adults remember it as well. It's an emotional story with a lot of “what ifs" that I think a student this age can relate to. It is written as a journal of the main character Charlie who is a special-needs adult. Reading anything in the first person gives readers insight into the mind of a character. In fact, it's Charlie's mind that experiences the big changes. This story leaves a rather significant emotional mark on the reader, so I would not recommend it for a younger student who is an “accelerated reader". 311 pgs, pb. ~Sara
