Only recommend with parental involvement - Middle'High kids
We are currently working through this book as an add on to a History and Government class. To preface, I have a B.S. degree from a Major University in the Sciences and we are mostly secular home-schoolers, although we are religious. I would NOT recommend any parent allow their child to read this on their own - thus my 2 stars. I enjoy Usborne but it is clear that this book is influenced by the current policies and views in the UK. That said, my young teenager (15) and I have been reading it together and it has opened up some excellent discussions. If it is used in that regard then I would give it perhaps 4 stars for the discussion it generates. There is a tendency in this book to regard certain opinions as fact and misunderstand democracy versus republic. This book is quite biased to the left in certain chapters. I do like how it is organized to discuss what politics is (that it's a group think/cultural thing - like your soccer team or club) and then moves on to forms of government and governmental systems and ideology. With my parental involvement, I am finding this to be VERY helpful in deepening my son's rational and intellectual thoughts on world government and social issues. For example, it quotes Karl Marx in the section on Communism and his statements about " Capitalists are those who exploit the workers..." This statement started quite the secondary discussion as to why our definition of words is important. I had my son look up Capitalism in many online dictionaries so he could see the agreed upon definitions. So this is the agreed upon best definition - "Capitalism is an economic system where private individuals and organizations own the means of production, and the prices of goods and services are determined by supply and demand in a free market. It's based on the ideas of private property, profit motive, and competition."
This blew my son's mind as the media generation kid he is (YouTube anyone?). We then had a discussion about Marxism, Socialism versus Democracies, Kingdoms, etc. So yes, this book MAY be a good investment IF you are looking for a well organized book for in depth discussions on Governments and Politics. So far, with my input and using it as a supplement, it is assisting me with teaching how ideologies can effect government and policy and vice versa in different government systems. Not recommended without parental input and discussion!
