Since 1956, children and adults have enjoyed watching ant colony activity with this classic kit. The "farm" is a clear upright rectangular frame thin enough that the activity of the ants is viewable from the outside. Ants form various tunnels through the substrate as they go about their daily routines. Frame is break-resistant and escape-proof. Harvester ants must be ordered directly from the manufacturer (for shipment in continental U.S. only) which includes a shipping fee. 9" x 14.25" x 1.5". CHOKING HAZARD - Small parts, not for children under 3.

We received our ants a few days ago. We have enjoyed watching them but most are already dead. A bit disappointed.

NOT the box pictured!
Mine came in a very nondescript box with "Ant Farm" on it... in addition to more text. NO PICTURE of the ant farm on the front.
Why complain about the box, you say?!
Because this is for a child's birthday present, and the picture on the front "introduces" the ant farm, and lets you get an idea of how it will look when it is all set up with ants... it gives one something to anticipate and shoot for.
For a child who loves ants, just seeing a nondescript box and then the bare ant farm inside.... it will look like some boring thing that will not spark any initial interest.
Therefore I gave it 3 stars.

Be careful with your ants and do this outside
This is a great idea for homeschooling children and science you set up the farm in a couple weeks later the ants come but when mine came I accidentally dropped the open tube on the floor it didnt fit onto the cage real well! My child was traumatized and we had to throw the whole thing away! My son had this when he was younger and I thought it be OK for his sister and it wasnt

Most Interesting Pets You Can Have
Easy to maintain. Ants do all the work, you just keep them fed, and they do the rest. They build their own housing, their own cemetery, everything the need. Make sure their location doesn't include direct sunlight! They don't naturally live underground for no reason.

What comes with this ant farm kit ??? Do we buy tunnel sand , food , ants and tools separate ???
You may be able to purchase supplies to connect multiple pieces, but if you just want a basic ant farm, the only thing you need to purchase separately is the ants. You will have to add a tiny amount of food and water once you get it set up, but you don't have to purchase special food.

Do i have to pay for ants separately?
You can use "local" ants you find in your yard. You can also order them online (paying for them separately). These used to include an ant shipment but that has been discontinued so I suspect there was some sort of issue.
