Genotype: Mendelian Genetics Game
- Small parts. Not for children under 3 years.
Another brilliant educational game has blossomed from the brains at Genius Games, this time teaching genetics! “Mendelian Genetics" specifically refers to the dominant/recessive traits inherited by offspring, often shorthanded to a 2 x 2 matrix of capital and lowercase letters respectively. Using a worker placement mechanic, players take various actions to grow pea plants in their monastery garden plots to confirm up to four possible traits: height, pod color, flower color, and seed shape. Traits can be homozygous dominant (RR), heterozygous dominant (Rr), or homozygous recessive (rr). As players draft dice representing these genetic combinations for each trait, they check off the matching trait from their plant, allowing it to be harvested for points once all traits are confirmed. Of course, “Rr" is the most common combination, meaning those traits are worth less points, and the rarer “RR" and “rr" combos are in high demand! Fleshing out this basic premise are tools that provide one-time boosts, assistants that help grow extra plants or confirm multiple matching traits, and permanent upgrades that cost money. While the game has a lot of options and involves a fair amount of strategy, it only takes a short time to understand and does not detract from the educational value. We highly recommend this as a standalone game and a supplement for high school science! For 1-5 players, with a 45 to 90- minute playtime.
Genotype: A Mendelian Genetics Game is a strategic board game set in St. Thomas' Abbey, where Gregor Mendel performed his paradigm-shifting experiments. Genotype is a worker placement and dice-drafting game where 1-5 players take the roles of research scientists competing to collect and validate experimental data on pea plants.
Players will spend time working on the monastery grounds, simulate plant breeding with dice and Punnett Squares, and use funding to further their research opportunities. Plan your research wisely, demonstrate your knowledge of genetics, and use the harvest schedule to your advantage to excel among your colleagues.
Genotype Board Game Features:
- STRATEGIC PLAY - A worker placement, dice-drafting game set in St. Thomas' Abbey, where Gregor Mendel performed his paradigm-shifting experiments.
- GENETICS-BASED BOARD GAME - Take on the roles of research scientists competing to collect and validate experimental data on pea plants.
- PUNNETT SQUARE - Players simulate plant breeding with dice and Punnett Squares, that represent each of the traits researched by Gregor Mendel.
- WHO CAN PLAY - This is the heaviest game available by Genius Games, and is better suited for people who are used to playing heavier games, who want to add some science to their game night.
- GAMEPLACY S & SCIENCE - Players collect experimental data on pea plants by observing how the plants inherit key traits from their parents: seed shape, flower color, pod color, and plant height.
