Publisher's Description of Exploring Handwriting Through US Geography: Cursive

Have you ever desired that your children learn more than one subject at a time? How about learning the Geography of the United States through handwriting?

His Story Handwriting™ and Memory Master Books™ makes this possible. Your children can learn to print while learning about the Geography of the United States!

This book is an excellent resource for learning and practicing print as well as doing copywork. While your students learn and practice printing their letters and numbers, they will also be learning about the Geography of the United States. You can also use the facts in this book as a memorization tool. As a bonus, at the end of the handwriting/copywork section of each state, there is a formated page for a brief state report.

Exploring Handwriting Through Geography is strategically designed to make your student successful. At the beginning of the book the student masters their cursive by tracing the facts provided. Then the book gradually removes tracing so your student can successfully write independently using the correct sized writing lines provided in the book.

GREAT VALUE: Our books have more pages upon which to practice print and copywork than any handwriting book we have ever seen. This makes our books, page for page, less expensive than any other handwriting or copywork books on the market and with much more content for the student to explore.

From learning great penmanship to Charlotte Mason style copywork, as well as Classical Conversations and other classical memorization teaching methods, His Story Handwriting™ and Memory Master Books™ are a must!

Fill in the blank with Scripture, Science, or U.S. Geography. Each book in the Exploring Handwriting Through series begins with individual letter instruction and practice of upper- and lower-case letters.

Lessons begin with a page of vocabulary words needed to understand the text. The vocabulary alone is worth using as a supplement to your school day. Students are shown a line of text (with a top, bottom, and midline), and they write their version directly below each word. They have to mimic the spacing as well as the lettering. Each sentence can take between 2-4 lines, and some of the words in the student lines are dotted for tracing (even at the cursive level). You can pull words of your choice for a spelling/vocabulary test at the end of the week, or have the kids incorporate the content into a writing/journal assignment.

You don’t have to be studying astronomy in science class to use the astronomy handwriting book – it can be a complementary topic and add some variety. The publisher recommends 15-20 minutes per day, or 15-30 minutes 3 times a week. All books are spiral bound and printed on both sides of the page. They are not reproducible. The more expensive books have 396 pp, and the smaller books have 112 pp. 8.5" x 11". ~Sara

Boring
This is just a set of facts about each state for the child to copy. One page is too much for a day of handwriting, in my opinion. I'm just not sure what would make this book useful. I had to buy it for a co-op class for my son. They did geography activities in class and the teacher wanted pages done from this book in between classes. There are far more interesting ways to learn facts about the 50 states, and far less tedious ways to practice and improve handwriting!

Why did you choose this?

I think is it a really good to practice both subjects

We are learning about U.S history this year and thought what a great way to practice cursive and learn history all at once

Chose this book for my 5th grader. We were planning on learning the states and this will be a 2 for one book for him. As we supplement lessons with other books and videos on the states.

I love this curriculum. I've used two of the other Exploring Handwriting Through books with my children, and have been very impressed with them. These are thick workbooks with plenty of practice…

How do they teach the uppercase Q?

It's pretty much a Capital O in cursive inverted. Which I think is alot less confusing than the ones that look like a real fancy 2.

Does the book become redundant - is it the same pattern for each state (in the short sample on Alabama I see: when it joined the union, what region it is in, the capitol, and major rivers) is this the same for every state or do they change it up a bit with other types of information? Also in the print edition I see there is a question page on California. Are there question pages/maps for each state? I'm looking to buy the cursive edition. Thanks!

We recently purchased the cursive edition and are just getting started. Every state pretty much has the same questions to fill out- in cursive, of course- regarding the basic facts and locations of the state. Maps are given with a map key and important geographic features for the state. My 4th grader is really looking forward to this material and he does great with knowing what to expect in each lesson. I expect it will be a great resource for him!

Do they teach the capital Q that looks like a 2?

I like the more traditional Q as well. I just teach my child any modifications before hand and correct them ahead of time in the book.
