Charlotte Mason
A methodology based on the work of a 19th century educator who maintained that children learn best from literature (Living Books), not textbooks.
Classical
A methodology based on the Latin Trivium (three stages of learning), including the grammar stage (memorization and facts), logic stage (critical thinking), and rhetoric stage (developing/defending ideas).
Unit Study
A thematic or topical approach centered around one topic that integrates multiple subject areas.
Montessori (Discovery)
A methodology based on the work of a 20th century educator that emphasizes student and sensory-driven discovery learning and real-life applications.

Description
Clearly written and fully illustrated, the Novare General Chemistry teaches students the purpose of chemistry, measurements, atoms and substances, atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding, molecular theory and metallic bonding, chemical reactions, kinetic theory, various laws pertaining to gases, solutions and concentrations, acids and bases, and redox chemistry. The history of modern chemistry, mathematics and technical communication is emphasized throughout. Answers to selected exercises are found in the back of the text along with some helpful information in the appendices. It is very important to read the teacher and student information found in the preface of the text –
this is where you will get a thorough explanation of the philosophy of the author and the best way to use the text. Every chapter begins with stated objectives, presents the information into smaller chunks that are offered in numbered sections, and rounds out the chapter with study questions. The author believes in questions that require complete sentences as a response, so you won't find any true/false, matching, or multiple-choice questions. The hardcover text is smaller than some (7"x 10") so the print is smaller, and there are colorful illustrations throughout.
Publisher's Description of General Chemistry (Novare) 3rd Edition

What's new in the 3rd edition? All revisions for General Chemistry 3rd Edition were made to reflect the substantial revisions to the metric system, which went into effect in 2019.

Did any of the other General Chemistry program materials undergo revisions? No, the General Chemistry experiments, solutions manual, and digital resources have not undergone any changes and can be purchased!

General Chemistry uses a mastery-learning method. In this method, students build comprehension by adding new concepts while reviewing and rehearsing key material throughout the year. This method is implemented in carefully crafted exercises, quizzes, and the textbook narrative, and it facilitates learning, mastery and retention.

Students appreciate the smaller profile and lighter weight of our books. This is possible because of aspects of our Textbook Philosophy. When mastery is the goal, you must cull down the material to an amount that can reasonably be mastered in one year.

Related subjects are integrated into the narrative. The history of modern chemistry, mathematics and technical communication is emphasized throughout. Integration protects a course from seeming compartmentalized from other subjects. That's certainly not how the real world is. Real chemists use math and writing skills every day. Their knowledge about how the scientific enterprise works is greatly enhanced by their knowledge of great scientists who came before.

Our approach to implementing a Kingdom Perspective does not entail unnaturally inserting Bible verses or devotional insets. A better approach for Christians is to do science from the faith-informed perspective of disciples of Christ studying God's created order. This is apparent in General Chemistry from the observations about order in the universe, in how nature submits to scientific study and modeling, and in the fitness of creation as a habitat for humanity and animal life.

Novare textbooks are bound and printed with superior craftsmanship so they are a pleasure to use and retain their value.

Category Description for Novare Science Courses

Novare Science emphasizes that science education needs to be renewed using research, scientific evidence, and forward-thinking strategies while keeping God at the helm. Students are taught to see God in creation, while learning current scientific theories including the evolutionary theory. Using a mastery approach, students learn fewer topics in more depth than typical courses while reviewing previously learned key concepts. Self-created lab journals and reports are suggested to prepare students for high school and college sciences. Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science are taught at the middle school level. At the high school level, Novare takes a Physics first approach to science and offers two pathways for students: Grade-Level Pathway and the Accelerated Pathway. Parents and teachers are encouraged to read From Wonder to Mastery by John Mays to learn about the program philosophy.

Novare Science offers two High School Pathways that link a student’s math placement and science courses. The Grade-Level Pathway follows a standard sequence of math courses (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Statistics), with a student taking Algebra 2 and Chemistry concurrently. With this sequence in mind, the Grade-Level Pathway for Novare Science is Introductory Physics, General Biology, and General Chemistry. Currently, there is no course from Novare Science for Grade 12 in the Grade-Level Pathway. It is recommended students complete an Anatomy and Physiology or Environmental Science course. The publisher plans to release Novare Environmental Science in 2025. The Student Lab Handbook is recommended for all courses.

Category Description for Novare General Chemistry

Intended for use at the 11th grade level, this mastery-based chemistry course takes a bit of a different approach from other chemistry courses. Focusing on fewer topics with more depth, Novare Science takes a Kingdom Perspective to current scientific theories. Prior to the course, students should have successfully completed Algebra 1, Introductory Physics and Biology. Algebra 2 should be taken concurrently. By following the author's suggestion of physics first, the student can more easily work through General Chemistry and have a greater understanding of the concepts. Through General Chemistry, students are brought into the real world of chemistry through detailed and clearly explained text, laboratory experiments, and carefully constructed exercises and quizzes. The history of modern chemistry, mathematics and technical communication is emphasized throughout. Typically, you need a lab component with chemistry courses. No labs are included in the Student Text, so the author recommends Chemistry Experiments for High School at Home for those who are homeschooling. This book has low-cost alternatives to expensive equipment and recommendations for procuring small quantities of chemicals. Optional and helpful resources include the Student Lab Report Handbook and the optional Lab Kit.  Required components include the Student Edition Text, Digital Resources, Complete Solutions and Answers, and the Chemistry Experiments for High School at Home to meet the lab requirements on your high school transcript. Available separately or as a convenient package for the full Program.
