Spencerian Practice Set
The traditional method for students to learn Spencerian Script was known as the Copybook format, where a model line of Spencerian penmanship was printed at the top of a sheet, with blank lines underneath for the student to practice their own writing. In this set by Michael Sull, the 29 printed sheets feature 100 model lines of penmanship encompassing the lowercase, capitals, words and sentences, and over 700 blank lines for the student's writing. In addition, ten blank practice sheets are included for the student's use, plus complete instructions.
Spencerian Script is a vintage form of ornamental penmanship that was popular a century ago; its golden age lasted from approximately 1850 to 1925. Today it's practically a lost art, but with careful study and diligent practice, it can be learned by anyone. Michael Sull suggests using this collection of instructional material as a follow-up to learning American Cursive as letter height and spacing are similar. Spencerian capitals have more curves (primary difference) and several of the lowercase letters are different but Spencerian capitals can be used with the American Cursive lowercase. The Text is a small (75 pgs, 7" x 8.25") spiral-bound book and, as you might expect (and hope), a beginning chunk of the book is devoted to writing equipment and tools. Strokes, then letters are illustrated and taught with possible variations shown; lowercase first, then capitals, with numbers thrown in for good measure. The Practice Set includes instructions and guide sheets as well as 29 pages of Spencerian exercises. Both the beginner height (1/8") and the advanced height (3/32") are included in this set. Keep in mind these line heights are for body letters. 3/8" and 5/16," respectively, are provided for upper and lower extenders. The Beginner and Advanced Practice Tablets provide 50 additional blank (no letters) guide sheets for additional practice in each of the heights. The cross drill is a unique exercise for developing proper letter spacing in which the student writes practice script across the page horizontally then turns the page 90° and writes the same exercise vertically in between the previous one. The Cross Drill Tablet provides 50 specially marked practice sheets for this exercise. Practice material includes Bible verses. ~ Janice

We purchased "Spencerian Script Practice Set," "Learning to Write Spencerian Script," AND also the "American Cursive Handwriting: Self-Study Workbook & Curriculum" --all by Michael & Debra Sull.
"Learning to Write Spencerian Script" is a nice in-depth instructional book for learning Spencerian script writing, included were 2 loose pages that are practice sheets (photocopy for student practice).
Instruction included for each letter plus some examples of alternative forms. Lower case letters look like traditional cursive with some additional shading; upper case letters have lots of additional flourishes. Allows the student to create their own "fancy" writing for special projects & their own beautiful signature.
I bought it for my artsy teen daughter who is interested in calligraphy & other creative lettering --she loves it!
"Spencerian Script Practice Set" is a bundle of sheets: 5 pages of basic instruction; 29 guided practice sheets, 10 just lined sheets. Similarly shaped letters are grouped together for practice, same as "Learning to Write ..." book, but definitely condensed. Upper case letters have the fancy style; lowercase letters can be shaded or unshaded --it is up to the student. Not as many alternative forms for each letter. Nice amount of practice sheets with models of each letters, then words & sentences.
"American Cursive Handwriting: Self-Study Workbook & Curriculum" is a packet of 349 loose pages that include history of, and instruction & practice for traditional cursive. No extra flourishes for letters.
Great for teaching traditional cursive with self-paced study.
Heads up: I ordered all 3 items at the same time in Aug. 2015 from Rainbow Resources, and all three had to be backordered and had delayed delivery. "Learning To Write.." & "Amer. Cursive..." arrived in Jan 2016, and the "Practice Set" arrived now June 2016. Seems the publisher had more demand than they were prepared for.? Hopefully, they have shortened the delivery times.
This is an indulgence for me. I am looking forward to playing with this style of writing!

I think it will motivate them to have good handwriting in general if I teach it as an art form :)
