The Alphabet Series Readers provide reading practice geared to the phonogram presentation as well as questions designed to cover vocabulary, inferential comprehension, and personal response. Series 1 provide books 1-18 and is used with the first 33 lessons (Workbooks 1-2) covering consonants, short vowels, consonant digraphs, two-syllable compound words, and ff/ll/ss/zz.
Publisher's Description of Alphabet Series Volume 1 Starter Set
This volume of 18 vocabulary controlled selections by Frances Bloom, Mary Geiger, et al., enables students to apply their phonics skills in context. The stories, which increase in difficulty as the lessons progress, help students practice target words? and review sounds and sight words. The stories enable emergent and struggling reader to practice skills while they read motivating, engaging stories. The Volume 1 storybooks correspond to the first third of the lessons in the manual.
This series of readers provides reading practice geared to an Orton-Gillingham phonogram presentation as well as questions designed to cover vocabulary, inferential comprehension, and personal response. The books are a nice, half-page size with black and white line art drawings. Volume 1 (books 1-18) covers consonants, short vowels, consonant digraphs, two-syllable compound words, and ff/ll/ss/zz. An Audio CD of this level provides a reading of the stories. Volume 2 (books 19-36) covers syllabication, consonant blends, ng/nk endings, syllable division, and magic E. Series 3 (books 37 - 39) covers alternative spellings and pronunciations, three-syllable words, 'schwa,' and affixes. The emphasis of Volume 3 is spelling rules, and it illustrates the relationship between phonics and spelling. These readers are integrated into the Recipe for Reading program but can also be used with other programs or as stand-alone reading practice. ~ Janice
We're excited to get started on our new curriculum. Looks like it's going to be a fun way to learn / relearn decoding words

Truly Decodable Readers
These are great decodable readers. They are aligned with the RFR curriculum, so the first book only uses the first 9 letters students are taught. They get progressively longer in addition to adding more sounds. Any sight words are listed on a pre-reading practice page in the back of the reader, so theres no need for kids to guess at words. The only thing I dont like is that theyre not bundled to match where the workbooks end. The last two readers in Volume 1 go with the first two lessons in Workbook 3, but then you need Volume 2 books for the rest of Workbook 3. The review was good practice for my son, though, and its cute how characters reoccur.

Excellent books for an Orton-Gillingham program.
I was very pleased with the books. Wonderful books for beginning readers especially when you are trying to teach children letter-sound correspondence. Very happy to add these delightful books to my collection.

bring back the old ones
I used the older edition of the Alphabet series for years with ld and ESL students of all ages. In addition to being vocabulary controlled and easy to read, they were quirky and funny. Despite the very low reading level they were interesting even for my older students. The new edition has the same easy to read format with controlled vocabulary but is missing the quirky humor that made the series so wonderful before. Others must agree with me because the prices on-line for used copies of the old series are very high. Bring back the old ones.

I really like there is a CD. Now, there should be for Vol 2. These kids struggle with reading, so listening is helpful.

I love Recipe for Reading and their associated readers. I have taught many children how to read using this curriculum. It has been around for decades and is based in science.

It was the most affordable and it goes along with the series, which is working great with my kindergarten and first graders! Highly recommended! Lots of great strategies included!
