I am such a proponent of solid phonics instruction! This classic resource authored by Wiley Blevins has been updated! Added are summaries of current research, practical strategies and phonics lessons. In addition are phonogram word lists, picture book suggestions, ready-to-use assessments, scope and sequence, guidelines for ELL (ESL) students and discussion of common reading problems with solutions. There is a lot of in-depth reading here. But information is also accessible: tips for decoding and understanding word parts and phonics instruction, etc. Section 1 defines phonics. Section 2 covers alphabet recognition and phonemic awareness. Section 3 goes in depth in teaching sounds and letters. Section 4 is also full of content, helping you devise phonics lesson plans that work. Section 5 focuses on individual needs. There's not just theory here. There are so many practical helps: word lists for each phoneme; games; activities; lists of most frequently used sounds and words . . . the content goes on and on.
