Description

Study of sentence types, sentence problems, sentence interruptions, sentence divisions, and sentence ends. Students study the newspaper, internet, and persuasion pieces. Imagery, symbolism, irony, ambiguity, conflict and subtlety are also taught. They study using rhetoric, the structure of an argument, writing descriptions_1, writing about people, places and events, creating a timeline, gathering facts and making it personal. Continued mastery of proper use of nouns, verb tenses, forms of adjectives, problems with pronouns, functions of adverbs and prepositional rules.

Designed as an independent learning curriculum, the Starline Press English programs cover a variety of language arts skills at grade appropriate levels. Aligned to California state standards (Please see publisher website for CA state standards correlation), each grade level provides self- directed instruction with minimal teacher supervision. Grades 3-8 complete twelve units (booklets) per year, with units averaging 24-60 pgs. each with a suggested 3 week completion timeframe. Grades 9-12 complete 5 booklets per semester/10 per year. Consumable booklets are colorfully illustrated and soft cover. Each grade level includes vocabulary lists, fill in the blank questions, chapter reviews, and unit tests. Literature studies are included in the fifth grade, seventh grade and upper high school levels. You may wish to include additional, grade appropriate literature with the other levels. Not worth the expense
We used Saxon Grammar and Writing for several years and really liked it. Unfortunately, Saxon Grammar ends with 8th grade, so we had to try something new this year. We decided it would be fun to try something different and we thought having a bunch for short workbooks to work through would be a nice change.

Well, we have not been that thrilled with this curriculum. The lessons are short, which seems like it would be nice for the student, but because of their brevity, they tend to be somewhat confusing. The directions for the exercises can also be confusing and many times I have had to look in the teacher's guide to get an idea of what is being expected of the student.

Finally, there are many typos and mistakes throughout the workbooks. For a curriculum that teaches English usage, the editors could have worked on their own usage and proof-reading skills.

This is a pricey curriculum that I don't think is worth the expense.
