Family Consumer Sciences
If you are looking to give your student a comprehensive foundation in home economics or family consumer sciences, this course is worth your consideration! Students will learn detailed information on numerous topics. Some of these include kitchen and food safety, the importance of clean up and dishwashing, kitchen and appliance use and maintenance, microwave cooking techniques, measuring, and cooking terms. The material also presents information about kitchen equipment, types and use of cutleries, how to use and adjust the yield of recipes, common measures, and equivalencies. Nutrition and key nutrients are also covered, including how to read and use a food label. The students will be familiarized with the USDA “My Pyramid," weight management and the topic of sports nutrition. Meal planning, budgeting, and shopping are discussed. More chapters cover topics like heating milk successfully, egg safety and different methods of preparation, baking with grains and yeast, food preservation, canning, and jelly making. I particularly like the table setting, napkin folding, etiquette and successful entertaining chapters, which would make a helpful long-term reference. The last few chapters teach useful information on choosing, storing, and preparing produce, types, cuts, and cooking methods of meat, and finally, appetizers and desserts. There are helpful charts, plenty of tips and techniques, as well as hands-on activities sprinkled through the book. Each chapter ends with section review questions. The answers to the review questions are found in the back of the Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Edition.
If you are looking for a one semester elective for your high school student or want to make sure your student has a good foundation in home economics, this is a very practical course. While it is written for grades 11 and 12, it could easily be used to teach 9th or 10th grade students.
The Family and Consumer Sciences text and Family and Consumer Sciences Lab Manual are the key components necessary for student learning. The Family Consumer Sciences Quizzes and Tests can be used to evaluate how well the student is retaining the "what" and "why" of the text material. The quizzes and tests are intended to comprise most of the student grade, with the projects assigned from the Family and Consumer Science Teacher Guide and the evaluation sheets from the Family and Consumer Sciences Lab Manual making the rest. The Family Consumer Sciences Quizzes and Tests Answer Key contains the answers for grading the quizzes and tests. The Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Edition has all of the information in the same order and format as the student text, plus the additional teaching information, scope and sequence, projects to be assigned, grading suggestions, and answers for all of the textbook review questions. ~Judy
