This lovely book simultaneously tells the story of Maria Merian, a German painter and engraver in the 1600s and also details metamorphosis and the life cycles of insects, especially butterflies and moths. She led a remarkable life, trained by her father and then step-father in all areas of painting and engraving, and tasked with collecting plant specimens and insects to use as models. She became an accomplished artist, but used her skills to study insects in more detail than was typical at the time. Fascinating story! ~Sara
