Description

If you are planning on doing Latina Christiana I with your children this coming year, here is a great opportunity to study the Latin words you'll be learning as vocabulary roots as well, reinforcing the word meanings in both places! Of course, even if you're not studying Latin concurrently, this book offers a strong root-based vocabulary course that examines Latin roots and some Greek roots as well. Each lesson presents a group of roots, prefixes, and suffixes to learn which correspond to the order of lessons in Latina Christiana I. Roots, prefixes and suffixes are introduced with their meanings, and are also clearly labeled with an "R", "P" or "S." Words that contain these parts are listed below in shaded boxes, and meanings are also provided for these words along with additional explanation or notes that are helpful. After the meaning has been given, a sentence with a blank is provided where the student can see how the word is used in context. Some lessons also contain a continuation of a story with blanks here and there, where students must supply the appropriate root-based word they have studied to complete the story. There are challenging review quizzes at the end of every lesson, which test students' knowledge of definitions, prefix meanings, suffix meanings, root meanings, and even the differences between a word's meaning in Latin and the word's meaning in English! Context Quizzes are also provided periodically, where students fill in the blanks in sentences by using words from the word bank above, gathered from several different lessons. There is no separate teacher's guide, so occasionally, teacher notes are referenced in the margins and explained at the end of the lesson. Complete answer keys are provided at the end of the book, along with alphabetical lists of all words introduced, words by prefix, words by suffix, root words, prefixes and suffixes all indexed by lesson number. With no fancy layout or graphics and a rigorous examination of roots, prefixes and suffixes, this a solid choice for root-based vocabulary study. 192 pgs, pb. Jess

Why did you choose this?

I chose this book because I feel it can benefit me as an individual and as an adult educating two young children. Everyone knows that the more you know without reference is easier to teach than…

It was a required text for Scriptorium Academic Writing Course that my Son is enrolled in.

Being used as part of Scriptorium Tutoring Academic Writing course.

The product description on Memoria Press's website says this is intended for Grades 6-8, but on Rainbow Resource, it's listed as Grades 3-5. I have a 3rd grade student this year...would he be overwhelmed or bored with this book?

It’s pretty straightforward as a workbook but the vocabulary does get advanced (magnanimous, tempestuous, etc), and while the lessons break down most of the meanings, there are activities and quizzes that expect recollection and memorization, so if your 3rd grader is advanced in vocab/language arts it could be useful, otherwise it’d probably be worthwhile holding off a bit to get full benefit.
Another resource we use along side this one is the I’m Lovin Lit Interactive Vocabulary Notebook which is a much more hands on and fun way to introduce roots. It would work well for most 3rd graders.

How exactly does this book work--is it a supplemental guide for literature to help you decode words you don't know? Is it expected that you will have taken a latin and/or greek course previously? My son would like to know more about these latin words that keep coming up in science and other settings but I'm not able to accomodate an involved enrichment course. Is this the answer?

This text can be used either as a stand alone course without any prior knowledge or with a Latin course. Each lesson contains a study of a few root words and prefixes and suffixes that are used with the lesson's roots. Later lessons build upon what has already been taught. Following the explanation section, there are examples,a short story and quizzes to check comprehension. I enjoy the format of this book and feel each lesson is succinct and the layout is straight forward and has a logical progression.

Does this correlate to the "new" CL1 or the older version?

Roots of English has not (yet) been updated. It was designed to coordinate with the 3rd edition of Latina Christian 1. It can still be used with the new 4th edition but will not line up lesson by lesson.
