Art of Poetry
"I dwell in Possibility—A fairer House than Prose—"While we think of poetry as the best words in the best order, we sometimes forget how important its poetic or metaphoric thinking is to various subjects such as writing, speaking, business, and science.
The Art of Poetry is an excellent middle or high school curriculum that teaches the practice of reading a poem closely and absorbing its beauty.
The Art of Poetry (Student Edition) contains 16 chapters and over 100 poems. The first 8 chapters cover the elements of poetry (such as images, metaphor, rhythm, and tone); the final chapters cover the forms of poetry (such as ode, villanelle, and open verse). Each chapter includes an extensive explication of one poem, along with exercises and discussion questions on additional poems. Biographies of 51 poets, a glossary of terms, an index of all the poems and authors, and an application section with ideas on how to continue a study of poetry are all included in this thoughtful course.
See our Support tab above for schedule recommendations and the complimentary audio files that feature the author, Christine Perrin, and her husband, Dr. Christopher Perrin, reading the poems aloud.
The Art of Poetry Teacher's Edition is also available. It features the entire student text, along with answer keys, teaching tips, detailed explications, and quizzes.
This is a consumable item.
This comprehensive course explores the depth and breadth of poetry, covering topics such as image, metaphor, symbols, words, sound, rhythm, shape, and tone. It also includes instruction in the formal history of poetry (form, movement, genres, structure, open verse, and narrative), and ends with application (poetry groups, journaling, keeping a notebook, finding mentors). Each of the fifteen chapters in the Student Book examines a topic, conducts an analytical reading of a given poem, and expects the student do likewise through a number of poems aided by a set of exploratory questions. Chapters finish up with a list of defined vocabulary words, plus a page of activities that give students many different opportunities to explore the use of poetry in more hands-on and practical ways. The Teacher Edition is a fleshed-out version of the student book. All student pages are included in the teacher's edition, the layout alternating between the student chapter and the corresponding section of teacher pages. The Package includes the Teacher Edition, Student Book, and DVDs. Zach
