Category Description for Risas Y Sonrisas

This is a 4-semester elementary Spanish course that is multi-media and multi-sensory. It includes songs, flashcards, domino set, picture cards, passports for vocabulary, games, skits, video, writing, maps, and even American Sign Language! The goal is to create a fun and relaxed atmosphere for kids to learn Spanish. The materials are colorful and can be used with multiple children, but each will need their own workbook.

With so many components, it is important to have a clear teacher guide to follow. The homeschool instructor manual is only available in the program kit. It begins with an explanation of the format and how it appeals to the whole brain, accommodating various learning styles, and addresses multiple intelligences. Essential pronunciation and reading skills are introduced from the start.

It then goes over the materials for the course: flashcard sets, reproducible blackline masters, songs, vocabulary, Q&A, readers theater (skits,) writing journal, assessment, helpful hints, and games (primary and secondary). The contents of the workbooks are outlined in 4 modules and then the instructor manual goes into the lesson plans, which are quite detailed and specific. One workbook (module) per semester, meeting twice a week for one hour.

Module 1: pronunciation, #1-10, colors, shapes, greetings, emotions, olympo y ana, body, directions, #11-100, and questions.

Module 2: family, opposites, adjectives, #100 and up, wild animals, school, days of the week, months, seasons, weather and holidays.

Module 3: verbs, personal pronouns, present/past/future tense, food, table settings, time, house, and building picture sentences.

Module 4: places, ser, estar, occupations, tener, clothing, farm animals, and building picture sentences. Each module will take about 20 hours to cover.

Student workbooks are now available in the ALL-IN-ONE Activity Workbook (021023). With the all-in-one workbook, comes a colorful, laminated cognate card with 163 easy Spanish words. Both the all-in-one and the separate activity workbooks are black and white and consumable (may not be reproduced). These are for students in Grades 3-5; younger students can learn without having to write. The Student Book is a required item that includes a full-color student text. This is available with a music CD or without one.

So, what is included in the Spanish Homeschool Program? Everything! The instructor manual, 1 year of online program access (which now holds the songs, games, skits, teacher administration tools and more), student book (no discs), the 4 workbooks, a cognates picture card set and folder, dominoes, Bingo Set and mini¬¬- verb conjugation card set. Multiple parts, however, means a fair amount of prep for the parent or teacher each lesson. As long as you keep the materials organized and follow the lesson plans, you will be good to go. Sticking to the plans of twice a week makes it doable, and the fun and games that are integrated into your Spanish lessons will keep kids engaged! ~ Sara
