Description

You know an approach to grammar is different when students and teachers are giggling. Indeed, Jane Kiester's 10-step approach to teaching grammar is rather amusing, with the bonus of being extremely effective, which certainly sets it apart from many other grammar books! How does Jane keep her classes giggling through grammar? The Caught'ya. In essence, the Caught'ya is one or two sentences of a continuous, humorous story, filled with grammar errors that the teacher wants to eliminate. In this book, Jane walks you through how the Caught'ya works and exactly how to integrate this approach in your own classroom. She starts by "inviting" you into her classroom to see how she uses the Caught'ya and then breaks down the process into ten easy steps. Ten steps may sound intimidating, but each one is a very small piece and the entire task only takes 5-10 minutes a day. In short, the ten steps consist of composing the daily Caught'ya sentence by deciding on a plot, the skills and a vocabulary word to address that day, writing the sentence down incorrectly on the board and critiquing students as they copy the Caught'ya on their own paper correctly, and concluding by checking the sentence together with the whole class, then having the students mark their mistakes, count up their own errors, and turn in their work. The complete, detailed explanations of each step are found in chapter 2. The third chapter focuses on how to evaluate the Caught'ya, with thorough directions on checking and grading the content as well as the format, using real student's Caught'yas as examples. Chapter 4 goes beyond the basics and describes how to use Caught'yas as a tool to teach other grammar skills such as spelling, diagramming sentences, and writing, among other tips. This chapter also holds sample spelling practices and Caught'ya grammar tests with answer keys. Assuming that many teachers may find the idea of creating their own funny story plot and outline a bit daunting, Jane includes six sample story ideas in chapter 5, two each for elementary, middle, and high school classes, tried and very successful in classrooms. These suggestions serve as a plot for you to flesh out through your daily Caught'ya sentences, each one offering a tidbit of the funny tale to anticipating students. If the task of writing your own sentences based on a given outline still sounds too hard, then you'll appreciate chapters 6-8, which each hold 100 daily Caught'ya sentences for your use until you are comfortable writing them yourself. Each of these chapters holds sentences for one of the sample stories from each grade level and gives you the passage written incorrectly and correctly, with the skills covered and vocabulary word. With her helpful, personal writing style, Jane Keister leaves you encouraged and fully prepared to "catch" your own giggling grammar students. ~ Steph

These materials are also comprehensive in scope but are supplemental as opposed to more complete programs.

I wish I could say that Caught ya Grammar with a Giggle worked for me with homeschooling but it didn't The approach behind it is for 'fun' ad the title suggests but not 'easy' as it suggests I struggled with adapting it to homeschooling as it was heavily written for a classroom setting Maybe it was because I was trying to adapt it for one student a 10 year old (the older child has an online program)Every chapter every paragraph in the book is in teacher-talk and is meant for the classroom I didn't find it 'easy' or 'effective' in this situation Wish I had saved my money in this case

As a homeschooling parent I couldn't really adapt this book for at home use since it is a classroom guide It's too bad as it may have worked otherwise if it were adapted for home school use

"Caught Ya! Grammar With a Giggle" has definitely been guilty of causing many giggles in my home! The author has many useful tips and instructions in the book ~ but in my opinion the real gem is in the prepared stories found in the last half of the book There are three complete stories one for each grade level (grades 3-5 grades 6-8 and grades 9-11) prepared and ready for your school use plus three additional story suggestions (one for each grade level) with plot ideas and suggestions for you to write yourself One sentence (there are 100 sentences per story) is read a day and the kids search for and correct all of the grammar mistakes they can find (answers are provided for the teacher) and learn a new vocabulary word with each sentence The story is very funny and my kids actually beg to do more than one a day (there have been days when they were not satisfied with doing 3 or 4 sentences)! We have started the first story long ago and have had long periods when we were not able to pull out the book (summer break Christmas break illness weekends and when mom just plain forgot about this resource ~ can you relate?) but that just doesn't seem to matter at all We simply read the story up to the point where we stopped (reviewing all vocabulary words previously learned as we go) and continue on My kids are currently in 3rd and 5th grades and we use a Charlotte Mason approach to schooling so we do not have much grammar instruction in addition to this book My youngest goes first at trying to find the mistakes then my 5th grader adds the mistakes she has found as well Then I will let them know how many more errors there are to locate and they eagerly search the sentence enjoying the challenge to find it on their own Lastly we each try to guess the meaning of the new vocabulary word using context clues from the sentence and then one of them looks the work up in the dictionary and reads the definition Even my two younger children (ages 3 and 6) enjoy hearing the story especially when their name is included in the plot! If a new grammar skill is learned (ie use of commas between adjectives) we sometimes practice this new skill by creating sentences of our own to write out or by locating an appropriate worksheet online or in another resource from the bookshelf We have learned a lot of grammar and some very fun vocabulary words that my kids now use in their own speech and writing It is not uncommon to hear a request for this book at the start of each school day Caught Ya! Grammar With A Giggle and Mad Libs are my kids absolute most favorite school activities This is a stupendous resource that your astounded pupils will be enraptured by (hint: this sentence includes four vocabulary words my kids now know and use thanks to "Caught Ya! Grammar With A Giggle")

This is a must have for teaching grammar in an easy fun and innovative way to multiple age students My 3rd and 5th grader loved this daily grammar lesson To them it was a game they loved to play During our summer break both my kids asked me if we could still do "Caught Ya" Grammar Not to mention all the times they enjoy saying "Caught Ya! Mom" when they find my grammatical errors! This book makes learning grammar fun for everyone!

Do you want your kids to giggle all through those tough grammar lessons while learning at the same time? Then Caught Ya! Grammar with a Giggle is the book for you Written for a classroom setting this book has been easily adaptable for my 2 homeschooled children (ideas are given on how to do this) It has been a fun and easy way to "teach" grammar Using a sentence or two from a continuing silly story (some samples provided or think up your own) with errors such as missing capitals punctuation homophones etc children fix up the mistakes by rewriting the sentence correctly The wonderful part about this program is that there is no frustration- the student gets a 100 for fixing anything they missed! In addition to grammar each sentence contains a new vocabulary word The process only takes 10 minutes with a high return on learning Even my 1st grader could do it! This book has ideas that will last you for yearsI highly recommend Caught Ya! Grammar with a Giggle for the public and home school class

Why did you choose this?

Learning grammar with humor sounds like a fun way to learn for some of my students.

I have used this book so many times, I need a new one. My 8th grade students love this activity year after year.

I need something to make Grammar a little more pleasant and this may just be what I'm looking for.
