Description

Elementary Mathematics Book 6 offers parent-child interactive lessons with a greater focus on independent work. Lessons take about 30 minutes, with 5 minutes of dedicated oral mental math expected. Concrete objectives are used less, as students are guided toward more abstract understanding. The authors recommend that Elementary Mathematics Book 6 and Practical Geometry Book 2 be used concurrently, with arithmetic taught four days per week and geometry one day per week. Three exams, one for the end of each term, are included. A grid notebook is strongly encouraged (5mm Grid Notebook if using Practical Geometry 2). Other recommended supplies include a personal chalk or dry-erase board and a 12” ruler with US standard and metric measurements. Number Sentence Cards 2 and 3 are highly recommended. A place value chart is optional. Book 6 begins with a review of Book 5, then covers multiplication and division of fractions, a review of decimals, rations and proportion, percents, and converting between decimals and percents, as well as percents and fractions, addition and subtraction of percents, percents less than and greater than 100%, banking using ratios, and more. Also included in Book 6 is extra written work for students who may need more practice before moving onto the next concept. A separate Answer Key with Solutions is included with Book 6.

Category Description for Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic

Based on the writings of Charlotte Mason in her timeless classic, Home Education, Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic offers a parent-child interactive approach to mathematics that lays a strong foundation for middle and high school math courses.

The approach emphasizes guided exploration through primarily oral math lessons to engage young minds. Lessons are sequential, with a small amount of daily review built in. Elementary Mathematics emphasizes a slow and carefully graduated approach to mathematics where students fully grasp concepts before moving on. Lessons are intentionally short (no fluff!) at 20 minutes per day (30 minutes for Levels 4–6). Parents are encouraged to work through each book at their child’s pace. For those needing more support, there is a suggested pacing schedule that divides lessons into three 12-week terms. Beginning in Book 2, there are three end-of-term exams included to ensure student mastery of concepts. Also beginning with Book 2, there are 40–50 pages of optional review exercises for students needing more practice to master concepts. Books 2–6 would also be an excellent tool for reteaching vital concepts that older learners haven’t mastered, as the lessons are interactive, interesting, and short. Household items and select manipulatives are used to build conceptual understanding.

Required for each year is the hardcover non-consumable Textbook and a notebook (grid notebooks are recommended). Answer Keys are included. Household items are primarily used for manipulatives, although Number Sentence Cards are suggested. Parents may be able to create their own using index cards. See individual descriptions for more information.
