So far, so good!
We're switching from Singapore to Saxon for middle school (and beyond) for a bit more repetition and practice (we still love Singapore for elementary). Saxon absolutely lives up to the reputation it has for being a gradual program with plenty of review. We don't find we need quite so much but it's easy to hand-pick which problems my student needs to do. I love the opening exercises and facts drill! And my student likes seeing progress in speed too. Solid program!

(We completed Singapore 4A and tested solidly into Saxon 7/6.)

Easier lesson time
We were previously doing a sequential approach with Math. It worked for a time until it didn't and my daughter was starting to get frustrated. The switch to Saxon had been a blessing. It made her grasp the lessons easier without getting overwhelmed. I would recommend this book set for Math.

10 Questions
Why did you choose this?

We are switching math programs.

I have never talked to anyone who has used Saxon math for their homeschool kids who didn't like it!

Saxon has worked well for my kids.

Excited to try this excellently reviewed product with my daughter.

Do I need to purchase the homeschool kit?

You really do!

What is included in the kit? I need an extra student text, test & worksheets book

What's included is the student text book, tests and worksheets book, and the answer key book. You probably have to order an additional student text book and tests/worksheets book individually or buy two of this kit, but you'll have an extra answer key book.

Will the Saxon 7/6 4th ED worksheets and test book work with the Saxon 7/6 3rd ED Text book?

After a fashion. The worksheets are fairly similar to the fact tests in the older edition. The tests are specific to the 4th editon and there might be a few changes in terms of lesson order but you should be able to use the newer edition tests with the older edtion text. Just beware that you may run into an occasional type of problem that hasn't been covered yet.

Is this 4th edition common core aligned?

As far as I know, it is not aligned.

Does this edition align with common core?

Why do you want to align with common core? If the goal is to score well on standardized exams, this text will get you there, regardless of it's alignment. Very thorough, spiral in nature, and complete.

I'm looking at ordering your complete kits, but I need a different math level than what they come with. Is there a way to switch them out?

We are not able to make any changes/substitutions in the kits. However, the consultants are happy to work with you to develop a custom curriculum plan based on the kits. (There's no charge for this service.)

If I have 3 children in the same Saxon math level, would they each need their own text or just the text and worksheets?

The textbook has the lessons/explanations and questions/problems to solve. The worksheets book has the tests, timed/math facts daily tests, and any supplemental worksheets for selected lessons. The "teacher book" has just the solutions.
Balancing out frugality and ease of use, I would get 1 textbook, 1 teacher/solutions book and 3 worksheet books.

What year was this published? Does it have timed tests for every day and mental math?

The copyright date is 2005. There are timed tests for every lesson. There is an investigation after every ten lessons, and there are tests every five lessons(starting at lesson 10). On investigation days, there is no timed test. But there is on test days. There is a box at the beginning of every lesson with mental math, and a special problem to solve. Then the student reads the lesson, then does the lesson practice problems. Next is the Mixed Practice which is 30 problems from all the lessons before including that days' work.

What year was this published?

I bought ours last summer June 2015 and the copyright date is 2005.
