Description

As an aspiring hotelier who runs a small hostel in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century, you want to attract nobles, artists, tourists, and citizens and gain favor with the emperor.  If you can attract enough guests, you need to hire staff, fulfill their requests for food and drink and furnish them with the rooms they desire.  Only then, will you have the chance to transform your small enterprise into the Grand Austria Hotel!

The goal of this game is to acquire the most victory points at the end of the game.  Important ways to do this are to prepare rooms and acquire guests to fill them while also trying to meet politics card challenges and move up the emperor track to avoid penalties and earn rewards.

The two core mechanics and components that drive this game are dice rolling and card drafting/management.  Dice are rolled each round to give players options to choose one of six different actions assigned to each number of the dice.  The more dice there are of each number may help decide the quantity or cost of each of the actions available that round.

Rooms and Guests:  Each player has a board that represents their hotel.  It is comprised of rooms in three different colors.  Red rooms are assigned to citizens, blue to Nobles, and yellow to Artists.  There are guest cards in the same three colors, plus green cards which are Tourists that can stay in any color room.  Before guests are assigned to rooms, two things must happen.  1.) Rooms must be added to the hotel in the appropriate color and 2.) guest cards must be obtained, and they each require different combinations of food and beverage (Coffee, Wine, Cake and Strudel).  Players start with one guest card and have a chance to draw another each turn.

Once a player has obtained the correct combination of refreshments for a guest, they may play that card on their turn to gain bonuses (food, drink, money, movement on the emperor track, discounts on room additions, etc.).  Some of these cards also provide immediate victory points.

Staff:  Staff Cards are your friends.  Players start with six and may have opportunities to add staff cards to their hands.  There are various costs to play these cards, and they offer different bonuses and opportunities.  Once purchased, they pay off immediately, once per round, perpetually or at game-end with victory points.  For example, the Butler lets you prepare Blue Hotel Rooms for no cost throughout the game.  If you play the Concierge, you receive 3 victory points per each occupied blue room.

There are seven rounds in this game, with three chances to earn additional resources and victory points or lose resources and points based on players positions on the Emperor Track.  Once the game ends, victory points are added for politics goal cards, Staff Cards, rooms occupied and leftover resources. The player with the most points wins!

I love the unique strategy, multiple scoring options and replay value of this game.  The rule book is easy to follow, the theme is fun, and I can’t wait to introduce this game to more of my family and friends.  For 2-4 players with a 90-minute playtime. ~ Marsha
