Description

The Package includes the four components of the PAL-Reading program: Teachers Manual, DVD-ROM, Phonetic Games Book, and the Phonetic Farm Folder.

The Teacher Manual (165 pgs, spiral-bound) outlines the four stages of instruction (Foundations, Activities, Discovery, and The Library) providing 80 step-by-step lessons.

The DVD-ROM provides Mrs. Pike's video introduction to the program as well as PDF files for the two Student Books and the four Student Readers (stock up on paper and printer ink). Bonus features include video and audio presentations by Mr. Pudewa ("Nurturing Competent Communicators," "The Four Language Arts") and Mrs. Ingham ("Poetry as an Integrator," "Intro to the Blended Sound Sight Program").

The Phonetic Games book (190 pgs, spiral-bound) provides game boards for 35 phonics reinforcing games. Each set of facing pages is designed to be cut out, cut apart, and glued (stock up on rubber cement) to manilla file folders (stock up on these, too). The rest of the book (cardstock pages) is the playing pieces for these games and yes, you will need to cut these out, too. Obviously, this program does require some teacher prep but trust me, this is an excellent balance between mom's time and mom's money. And, if done a little at a time as needed, it will not be oppressive.

The Phonetic Farm Folder provides both reinforcement and review with a combination of engaging graphics and mnemonically themed stickers. The tri-fold, heavy cardstock folder provides the farm scene background to which colorful stickers are added as part of nearly every lesson. Each area of the farm is for similar sounds. "R" controlled phonograms are located in the barn. Beehives are for long-e sounds, while the Silo holds the long-o sounds (and that's just the beginning). One flap of the folder is the Phonetic Village where buildings such as the Jail, Silent Letter Library, and Foreign Caf provide more places to organize the spelling rules. The back of the folder is a complete listing of phonics rules and jingles.

Is it possible to fall in love with a reading program? I think it was love at first sight for me when I saw the clever and colorful Phonetic Farm Folder. Fortunately, there is much more to this program than just pretty packaging... a lot more!

The program has four distinct stages. The Foundations stage (19 lessons) is teacher intensive (it gets better after the first month). You are directing, modeling and helping the student practice. During this stage, both phonograms and sight words are presented, and stickers are added to the Phonetic Farm Folder. Daily work pages with reinforcing cut-and-paste activities and reading practice pages are also part of this stage. Poetry, however, is the centerpiece and starting point for each lesson. Absolutely delightful poetry selections are read and memorized.

The Activities stage (next 38 lessons) is a time for reinforcement. Games introduced during Foundations are carefully selected, and time each day is spent playing them (think learning stations). It is during this time that a set of four readers, the Phonetic Farm Readers, are introduced.

Stage 3 is Discovery (2-4 weeks) where the student, using sets of 10 cards daily, practices decoding words without pictures or context clues. The goal of this stage is to graduate to the Library (Stage 4), where students read their way through three levels of books..

While the general method for this reading program belongs to Mrs. Ingham, its user-friendly, well-organized features are the loving work of Jill Pike, homeschooling mother and author of other IEW programs. Lessons, which follow a pattern (poetry, writing, instruction, reinforcement, wrap-up), are easy to follow but not quite scripted. Mrs. Pike provides a detailed lesson "talk-through" which is part of the DVD-ROM. In these presentations she leads you through the use of each component and explains the significance of each aspect of the methodology. Additionally, she has liberally bestowed her wisdom in the form of teaching tips and explanations throughout the daily lessons.

The scope and sequence for this program is unusual. Consonants, vowels, and letter combinations are presented together from the beginning and the order of presentation is organized around the poetry that is being read and memorized. Phonics rules, spelling rules, and sight words are added concurrently but are constantly being reviewed and reinforced. By the time the student is ready for the first reader, he's also ready to read a rather amazing number of words. The goal of the program is fluent reading at an end-of-first-grade level, which means that by that time all the basic phonograms and suffixes will have been presented. The student will be ready for more advanced syllabication decoding.

Choose this program because you are enthralled with all aspects of language and you want to impart that excitement to your child. Or choose it because you love organization and user-friendliness. You won't be disappointed either way. ~ Janice

Total Game Changer
This has been a game changer for us! My son loves learning to read again! He’s been enjoying all the games and activities in the lesson. I really like the foundation this lays for him. He’s set up to be a strong reader and he’ll be prepared and ready to go for his IEW lessons as he gets older. Everything is included and it covers a full language arts curriculum. I like how you can take it slow for children that are new to reading or you can cover it quicker for children that are filling in the gaps. Great program that covers many styles of learning.

I simply cannot say enough good things about this reading program 3 of our 4 children learned to read with PAL Reading the 4th only learned with something else because she was already in 2nd grade when it was first published! The file folder games alone make the program worth every penny The games cover a broad and thorough range of phonics practice The initial investment of time to set up the program made for little prep as we went on But my real love of this program is the diversity it offers different learners Cutting glueing coloring games poetry marking directly on the passages they are learning farm folder stickers so much engages the children from the very beginning One of our children who used this program has dyslexia We found PAL for her after failing with every other reading approach we tried It convinced us to pursue the more hands on multi-sensory approach Our children are now in upper elementary all reading well The PAL Reading gave them a solid foundation

This works so well! I started teaching my son to read when he just turned 4 because he asked me to I at that time was using a very dull but perfectly sound program It just did not keep his interest (I realized later) I initially thought he just was not ready developmentally (he is a boy :)) and so I told him that we'd wait a few months I stumbled upon IEW and subsequently PAL I bought both reading and writing I was overwhelmed initially with all of the instructions but I just kept at it - watched the DVD and read the book intro a few times each Things became clearer but I was still unsure if all of this was going to be too much I put the folder games together and picked a date to start I initially spent 3 days on each lesson because he still was only 4 (and constantly asking me when I was going to teach him how to read) After about 10 lessons I spent 2 days on each lesson as we really got into the rhythm of the program and the method became crystal clear to me - not to mention this was working!! Fast forward a couple of months and my son at the age of 4 was reading - by sounding out words - words neither my husband nor I had ever shown him! Well my mother-in-law who is a retired 2nd grade teacher and not too thrilled about homeschooling and would even make little jabs regarding homeschooling was completely silenced during our summer trip to visit She has not made another jab since My son loves this program We are almost 70% through the program and I could not be happier with the results! Keep in mind that it is designed to last 1-2 years when taking the cost into consideration We recently started the writing program and it has been equally successful Get it! Each part is necessary to buy (Teacher's manual phonetic farm folder and the DVD) It is fantastic!

I like this program and will continue to use it but it goes much faster than many kindergarten programs I've used It teaches up to 4 new letters a day and 2-3 sight words Homophones are introduced in lesson 5 and diagraphs are also started right from the beginning It's a lot especially if your child doesn't start out already knowing all the letters and their sounds I break up the lessons and take what I like from this and combine it with what I like from Saxon phonics and it's workable If this was my first time homeschooling and I wasn't used to adjusting curriculum I would be totally frustrated with PAL I do feel like it along with Primary Arts of Writing prepares my son well for future writing and narration

Why did you choose this?

Because we use Phonetic Zoo for our older children.

mine was damaged by water and I need to replace it. It was a bit frustrating y'all dont offer just the primary arts of language teacher manual by itself like you do the writing one.

Recommended by an experienced home school mom.

Apart of Oakwell Academy Curriculum

Is this good for a first grader? New to this homeschool program.

I’ve used it up to 2nd grade because the foundation for learning to read well is very important!
