A foundational goal for strong writing is effective paragraphs: descriptive, narrative, persuasive, expository, and comparative. Use this text as a supplement, or combine with grammar, mechanics, and spelling for a full composition course. The structure of this publication permits educators to tailor pacing and usage to individual needs. Lessons direct students to create each of the 5 paragraphs following the same steps: choose a subject, create details, organize the outline, write a topic sentence, review, order supporting details, write a conclusion, write rough and final draft (11 total). Directions are in large font, with sample passages even larger, making analysis easier. Passages are student friendly, short and varied; themes often include holiday activities (Halloween Trick or Treating, Easter Egg Hunts, Christmas tree trimming, without religious content). Each student will need this book and a 2-pocket, 3-ring binder to store work which becomes a final portfolio. An answer key is available online. ~ Ruth

I want a very structured way to teach how to write a strong paragraph in order to get better prepared for writing 5-paragraph essays.

Would this be appropriate for an 8th grader that struggles with his writing or would it be too young/easy?

I really liked this book, however I used it with a 4th grader. It does a very good job of teaching how to organize and structure a paragraph. You could do the first few lessons as a paragraph and follow the same format for the later lessons, but instead have your child write a short five paragraph essay. I appreciated that when finished with the book, I was confident my daughter could easily write a paragraph with an introduction, conclusion, and points that supported the topic she was writing about. This coming year I hope to have her take what she learned and write 5 paragraph essays without going through another writing course.
