Saxon Rocks. Love this math program
I have twins in the 8th grade. We have used Saxon since 6th grade. I wish I had learned about it sooner. My two learn math at different paces and with different strategies. I can use this curriculum to be much more hands on with my son, who needs time to digest and speak ideas aloud. Conversely, my daughter prefers to tackle the information much more independently and then correct errors together.

What we love: that the curriculum always uses preciously learned skills, while rolling in new skills through out the year. The students are always using established learning with new. This is much preferred to the math we left at public, where they learned a chunk of information then moved on to another skill, then the next learning block.

Easy for my son
This year we tried Saxon math, and so far we love it. Easy to follow along and step by step instructions. My son isn’t frustrated this year and for that, I am thankful

Happy so far
The program is very systematic, has plenty of practice problems, reviews previously learned material to keep the knowledge fresh and is easy to implement for the teacher. We are happy with it so far.

Great but...
We didn't need the solutions manual, which explains in great detail WHY an answer is wrong and/or HOW to get that answer step by step. I guess if the parent doesn't have a basic understanding of mathematics, or if the student is self-correcting, that might be important. But it was an additional expense and not necessary.

Amazing
I LOVE Saxxon Math! I have been homeschooling my children for 6 years now and math has been grueling and inconsistent. Now, it's a breeze! No more stress because the work is broken down and explained and each concept they learn is continued throughout each lesson. So they never forget what they are learning as they go. I am very pleased and will be returning each year to Rainbow Resource for our school curricula.

Saxon Algebra 1/2
I bought Saxon because it is not Common Core. My 6th grade son did two years' of Singapore Math last year, and the way Saxon constantly reviews previously covered key topics is good for him and enables him to cement the concepts more into his brain, even though he does not like the repetition. The text is clearly written and topics clearly explained, but my son does find it somewhat boring. Although it is recommended that students do ALL the problems, I generally have my son do 2/3 - 3/4 of them. Otherwise, he becomes easily bored and loses focus. In this sense, maybe an on-line program would have worked better for us - one that determines whether he has fully mastered a concept and thus doesn't repeat so much. It would save me a lot of time each week, that's for sure. But my son already does some of his subjects such as vocab and Spanish on-line, as well as a live writing class, so he didn't want to spend so much time in front of the screen.
There is a test for every four lessons in the textbook.
If your student takes the placement test and doesn't miss a lot of Algebra 1/2 topics, you can start by giving them the tests in the Test Forms booklet to see how far along in the textbook you can start.

Why did you choose this?

School Requirement

Its needed

Just finished Saxon 8/7 and my daughter wanted reinforcement so choose Algebra 1/2 instead of Algebra 1

Great Price, Excellent teaching method.

Just finished Saxon 8/7 what book would I select next?

Algebra 1/2 follows 8/7, however; if a student is on an accelerated math path, and does especially well on the last 40 lessons of 8/7, they can do Algebra 1 after 8/7. You need to determine if you will do 3rd edition (the traditional Saxon) or 4th edition (the school version) at this point.

is Algebra 1/2 for just one school year or two years?

Hi Jessie,
The Algebra 1/2 is the equivalent of a Pre-Algebra course. It is designed to be for one school year. That is how we used it for our son and it worked well for us. If you are homeschooling, you always have the freedom to go at your child’s pace though. Hope this helps!

I bought the homeschool kit for Saxon 1/2. Is there book that gives the solutions for the Practice sets? Our solution guide only has the answers for the problem sets.

In the back of the booklet labeled Homeschool Packet, there is a section (booklet says Textbook Answers in upper right corner of the page) that includes the practice problem answers before each lesson's problem set answers. In my book, it is page 47. In the back of the text (p. 463) answers to odd-numbered problems from both the practice and problem sets. I'm not sure why it only includes odd-numbered problems.

Are these books consumable?

No, we have found that there is not enough space in the text to show any work, and have therefore done all the work in a separate workbook. The test booklet has room to do some work, but not all, so we have elected to keep things consistent, and do all the calculations the same workbook as the text questions. Hope that helps.
