Spanish Grammar, with Exercises (Spanish Edition)
Modern second language acquisition has a different focus now than in past years; newer computer courses emphasize speaking & listening over the older reading & grammar method. This book is old school Spanish, literally. It is reprint of an original Spanish text for American students from about 1923. The old book was scanned, so the print looks vintage. If you are a fan of old textbooks or are learning Spanish but prefer a more traditional method than a computer, here is an option. The lessons assume you have a fluent instructor and begin with the alphabet and basic sounds. 610 pages walk you through basic grammar, ser & estar, formality, numbers, time, pronouns, comparing, negative, subjunctive, conditional future and more. By the end of this book, you will have covered about the same content as a modern first-year Spanish course. It is not the engaging & interactive presentation many students are accustomed to, and there is no audio component available. That said, the language instruction is solid. A glossary in the back serves as a handy reference. This book would be hard to use without some level of fluency in the student or instructor, but I like the charm of the old type and no-nonsense explanations. 610 pp, pb.~ Sara
