This 20-page workbook teaches students how to read and create various types of maps. Through activities and worksheets, students learn basic map terms, how to understand compass roses, symbols and scales, and how to use lines of latitude and longitude. Some of the worksheets teach about time zones and why they are necessary. Students will create maps of their classroom, neighborhood, and state. They will also learn how to chart a route and what to consider when planning to travel. About half of the worksheets deal with an American map and identifying capitals, rivers, seas, etc. An answer key is included. ~ Rachel S.

Your students will learn to read various types of maps as they complete these activities that focus on latitude and longitude, time zones, landforms, cardinal and intermediate directions, map symbols, and more. The activities address local, U.S., and world geography.
This workbook was useless for us. I don't know if there was supposed to be another textbook with it or what, but it would have assignments that said to use a map on a specific page to answer the questions. The map would be there, but it would be entirely insufficient to answer the questions. For example, in the second assignment, there was a blank US map. The student was told to fill in all the states and the great lakes. But nowhere in the short lesson did it teach the material prior to them needing the answers. The next lesson has a map of the US, the states are now labeled, but the questions expect you to know all the capitals. So if your child already knows these things, they will do fine with this workbook. But if your child actually is expecting to LEARN things they don't already know, look elsewhere.

Does this include a good map to show that Alaska is huge and connected to Canada and not small and out in the ocean?
Actually, the cover map portrays exactly that concept although you will have to point out Alaska, Canada, and the United States. Since it is a Robinson projection, it accurately displays the size of the various states/countries in relation to each other as well as clearly showing Alaska's attachment to the North American continent.
