My initial thought when I opened this book was, “Wow! This is an intense book of musical theory." It seemed more in-depth in content and difficulty than my freshman music theory course in college!" After a little research, however, I learned it is an entry level college course. This book is written from a traditional viewpoint. The author says there is no previous music theory knowledge required, but the ability to read music and play an instrument or sing is assumed. There is a thorough study of melody, rhythm and texture included to help present a more balanced view of the structure of music. There is also a section on two-part and four-part voice leading and harmonization, which are considered significant. If you have a musically gifted student who plans on majoring or minoring in music, this would be an excellent upper high school elective or fine arts credit. ~Judy
