R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey Biology Level 1
Rigorous and engaging, this elementary secular Biology curriculum offers incremental lessons, hands-on experiments, reading lists, and more. Beginning with an introduction to biology, this course covers cells and DNA, animal and human anatomy, plant structure and function, evolution and natural selection, ecology, and the evolutionary tree. Students will also learn and practice the scientific method. Lead by “Bear” your Tardigrade guide for the course, the lessons are presented in a child-friendly narrative that explains vocabulary words and scientific concepts using age-appropriate language, examples, and activities. 36-week schedule is included, at a pace of 2 days per week. Experiments use easily sourced items. A microscope (40-100x minimum) and microscope slides are suggested but not required.
Tactile and rigorous, this classically-based science program provides an excellent science experience. The program is designed for the non-science parent. If you are a squeamish person, R.E.A.L. Science may not be for you. You'll get dirty, handle bugs and worms, and learn through experimentation. The lessons in the book are intended to be done in order from start to finish, each lesson building upon the previous lessons. Two levels are available, perfect for multi-age learning or homeschool co-ops. The all-in-one text for Level One teaches science in an entertaining story-like format with hands-on activities, along with background science information, instructions, reading lists, journaling ideas, and supplemental websites. Student Worksheets are reproducible in Level One, although Student Pages are available separately. Science is planned 2-3 times per week. Formatted for independent learning, Level Two student texts bring science alive by engaging young people's minds through active participation in learning. Spiral bound Student Texts offer instruction and consumable activity sheets and review pages. Consumable student materials are available separately. Teacher Guides are recommended and include weekly schedules, learning goals, math concepts for labs, lesson reviews with information not found in the student book, lab material lists, answer keys and grading guidelines.
If you love the Italic Handwriting Series by Getty and Dubay, but would like a bit more practice, this product is just what you're looking for. The CD is composed of practice pages that you can use in conjunction with all of the workbooks, Levels A through G. They are meant to be used as an introduction to the workbook pages, or as a review for those students who need a bit more practice, but they are in no way replacements for the workbooks, which is where students learn the proper letter-forms. The CD contains a PDF file, so you need Acrobat Reader (which is included on the CD) to view and print the pages. The CD consists of 50-60 half-sheet worksheets for each level, and each worksheet identifies which page in the actual workbook it is meant to go along with. Since it's just a half-page worksheet, you may think there's not that much extra practice (two handwriting lines per page in Book A and twelve lines in Book G), but you can print out each worksheet as many times as you'd like to give your student the amount of practice they need. This is a great supplement to the actual workbooks, especially for those students who struggle to perfect their handwriting. Rachel
