Description

Just after World War Two, President Truman and other politicians organized an effort to transport several of America's founding documents by way of a special train. This initiative was known as the Freedom Train, and it sparked numerous rallies and patriotic gatherings in cities around the U.S., both big and small. It also sparked a fair amount of controversy, for the Freedom Train exhibitions were open to all Americans, regardless of race or religion. This novel tells the tale of two boys, one black and one white, who learn what true freedom really means as they work together to overcome injustice and racism when the Freedom Train visits their home town. The lessons they learn remind them and many others in the town of Atlanta that sometimes people need to stand up for what is right even when it is not popular. This book contains larger print and two black & white photos. 140 pgs, pb. ~ Mike

Publisher's Description of Freedom Train

Its 1947, and twelve-year-old Clyde Thomason is proud to have an older brother who guards the Freedom Traina train that is traveling to all forty-eight states carrying the countrys most important documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. Clyde is chosen to say the Freedom Pledge at the trains stop in Atlanta, but his terrible stage fright forces him to refuse the honor. Instead, its the class bully, Phillip, who gets selected, and he begins to torment Clyde. When an African-American boy saves him from a beating, Clyde is shocked. Especially when he learns that William lives in the white part of town. How can this be? And why cant he bring himself to be friends with William?

Clyde hasnt told his parents he wont perform the pledge, nor has he mentioned his confusing friendship with a boy of color. So when the townspeople threaten Williams family, Clyde has a choice to make: Will he keep quiet, or stand up for real freedom?

Ideal for classrooms, Freedom Train contains historical photos of the Freedom Train and its guards, as well as an authors note that provides additional information about the history of the Freedom Train.
