Description

Sailing the Caribbean in the 17th century, England, Spain and France were all trying to improve their global standing.  On your sailing vessel, embark on your own journey stopping at island towns and villages, build your card tableau, earn access to additional actions, influence the political climate and gather treasure.  Each voyage represents one of four rounds in the game with players earning points during the game, at the end of each round and at game-end.  The player with the most points wins the game.

Gameplay:  Players take turns performing three main actions:

  1.  Sail your ship:  Carefully plan which city or village to drop anchor.  There are actions available at each location and depending on the cards you have to play, there may be several strategies to weigh.  You may move anywhere from 1-7 locations on each turn.
  2. Take one main action and as many free actions as you choose:  Which actions are available will depend on whether you land in a city or a village.  Cities allow you to deliver a good and then perform an action indicated on the tile located there.  Villages allow you to take from 1-3 actions depending on how many movement steps you took in the sailing action.  Some villages have quests that you can fulfill to gain resources or points.  If you have placed an assistant at the location by playing a specific card to your play area on a prior turn, there will be a corresponding action available any time you sail there.  One of the activities that is always available during a visit to a village is to play a card to your tableau.  Cards give you benefits during the game and/or boost your abilities during the game.
  3. The final action is to draw cards from the deck up to your allowed limit.

You may also take free actions on the action phase of your turn.  They are (1. Take one card that is in your hand and move it to your planning area.  This commits that choice as a future play to your tableau.  It also reduces the count of cards in your hands so that you can draw an additional card to your hand. (2. If you complete one of the career goals that all players receive at the start of the game, you may take the associated reward.

Besides standard game play, there is an additional campaign variant and solo play instructions that add further variety and options.

This is a rough outline of game play but because this game is complex with regard to actions and strategies, I advise this brief preview by the publisher if you wish to learn more.  You may have to copy and paste these links into your web browser.

Maracaibo has a permanent place in my collection and is a solid favorite for me.  For those of you who like complex games with interwoven strategies, I highly recommend it!  For 1-4 players with an average 30-minute game time. ~ Marsha
