Description
Publisher's Description of Language Lessons for Today Grade 2

A Charlotte Mason and classical approach with short, easy-to-teach lessons for English usage, punctuation, composition, oral language skills, letter writing, and more. Includes narration, picture study (some printed in color), copywork, and dictation, as well as fables and poetry by famous authors such as Christina Rosetti, Edward Lear, and Robert Louis Stevenson. This non-consumable book (not a workbook) has enjoyable oral and written activities that may be used exactly as written or adapted to a child's specific needs and learning style. Includes teacher instructions and answers. Language Lessons for Today: Grade 2 was adapted by My Father's World from Primary Language Lessons by Emma Serl (1911), with significant revisions, updated language and examples, and additional new content. For 2nd Grade. Cover updated February 2018 with no significant text revisions.

Revised and expanded by My Father's World, this publication builds upon the beloved Emma Serle's Primary and Intermediate Language Lessons, with grade appropriate lessons, additional content, new (colorful) graphics, and parental teaching support and student lessons, all in one book. While the instruction is not comprehensive, there are helpful teaching directives at the top of numerous lessons which are not self-explanatory. The Answer Key is available free online. Directions for accessing the Answer Key are included in the book.

Mrs. Serle's philosophy of oral and written lessons is evident. Lessons are diverse and include oral (later written) composition, picture study, poetry memorization, copywork, dictation, poetry and literature studies, oral narration, and dictionary usage. Lessons are interactive and will take approximately 15-20 minutes per day. If you are intimately familiar with Mrs. Serle's work, you may notice the 2nd grade book is the truest to the original, with significant additions to grade 3 and up, including hymn studies, picture studies based upon Biblical events and persons, and literature excerpts. While the books are considered grade level, there is some flexibility available and parents will easily be able to 'tweak' these books for children of close ages or abilities. Since many of these lessons use classic readings and poetry, they could also be easily adjusted for struggling students, while preserving the child's self-esteem.

Overall, the changes made to this series have only served to improve upon the gentle, exploratory language arts instruction found in Mrs. Serle's classic work. Written activities will require a 3-ring notebook and notebook paper. A dictionary is also recommended for grade 3 and up. Each book contains 102 lessons. ~ Deanne

Short and Easy to Use
My son likes working with this book. The lessons are short and pretty easy. So far there hasn’t been much writing. Consequently, I’m not sure how well it’ll work for the purposes of written composition.

Language Lessons for Today 2
I used this with my older children but understand more now about Charlotte Mason methods and the purpose of doing the various types of exercises, which has added to the richness of the lessons. I think this is a great way for young ones to learn observation, sentence structure, syntax, grammar, composition, memory, and more. The lessons seem simple but the "how to" information for each type of lesson helps me to focus on the goal and embellish the lesson based on the needs of my child. I think it's a natural and great way to learn.

Highly recommend it
We are really enjoying this "curriculum" it is part of My Father's World Adventures in US history but i see that it could be use alone if needed. It is very charlotte mason and easy to just open and go. It is not writing intensive but you do get a good amount and tons of opportunities to copywrite and to learn language by immitation correct grammar usage. Highly recommend it.

Beautiful book
This book is beautiful in so many different ways. The poems, the language used in how the questions are asked and the old color pictures. At first I thought this book would be boring and to easy, but, it isn't. You can do so much (or not) with the lessons in this book. It really helps with teaching your child how to communicate/write language in a clear, descriptive way while teaching proper use of it. It is open and go, very easy to use.

Why did you choose this?

because I forgot to purchase it with my MFW bulk purchase and this was a tad cheaper than buying it right from MFW site.

Looks simple, effective, and easy to use

Recommended by Cathy Duffy Reviews.

Because of the Charlotte Mason method used.

Is this adequate for LA if not using MFW overall (description states LA interwoven in other subjects)?

I contacted MFW and they said that I could use it without their other curriculum with no problem. It is a more gentle, Charlotte Mason type Language Arts. I am using it with my 1st grader to introduce things like nouns. Occasionally, something is over her head like dictation. If you are looking for something gentle and simple, this is a lovely book. It does not include spelling.
