A really active way to learn to manipulate numbers! Game consists of an open box, with flip-up number "keys." A felt area in the base provides room for the two dice to roll "in captivity." To begin, the 1st player rolls the dice. The player may then flip up any combination of numbers which match their roll. Example: If player rolled a 12 they could flip up just 12 or 11 and 1 or 10 and 2, or any 1 or 2 number combination which totals their roll. The 1st player continues rolling the dice until rolling a number which cannot be played. Example: Player rolls 12 again but has used all possible combinations while making other rolls. Player 1 now counts up all numbers which have not been flipped over. This is the 1st players score. If a second round is played, the 2nd player begins first. The player with the lowest score wins. Although simplest to describe with two players, any number may play. ~ Alysia
Publisher's Description of Shut the Box Game
This classic game from Ideal® teaches probability, chance, and basic math! Players take turns rolling the dice to "cover up" the numbers on the board. Continue rolling the dice and using either addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, cover up the numbers until there are no more possibilities. For example- if a player rolls a 5 and a 4 they can cover 9, 8 & 1, 7 & 2, 6 & 3, and so on. Add the remaining numbers for your score. The second player repeats the process, rolling the dice to cover the numbers, until they can no longer cover the numbers. The player with the lowest score wins! This is a great educational gift for kids and can be used at home or in the classroom! Perfect for kids ages 5 and up!
We really enjoy playing this game. One game lasts a little while, but it is much more fun than just drilling sets of addition facts.

Fun game but no box!
I should have looked more carefully at the picture. This version of Shut The Box is about the size of a sheet of paper. It is a fun, simple game that enhances math skills. It can be played with any number of players because you take your turn and then pass to the next person. Lowest score wins. The original game comes in a wooden box. You open to play and shut it if you win (if I recall the rules correctly). This one has no lid. It is nice enough. The wooden dice are cute and clear. The pieces seems sturdy. On the downside, the interior ridges where sharp and needed to be smoothed with a nail file. Also, mine did not sit quite level. It rocks ever so slightly if on a perfectly smooth surface. I plan to replace this one with the smaller boxed version.

This game is fun for children & adults of all ages!On different occassions I noticed my 10 yr old playing this game at our friend's home When I saw that Rainbow Resource had this available for a good price I knew we needed to purchase itI was pleasantly surprised to discover our younger children (almost 5 & 3 yr old) also enjoy this game The almost 5 year old likes to flip the numbers as he counts/says the numbers in order Who says you have to play by the rules? This game allows for you to play with it by the rules or in other waysWe also have an older child 13 yrs old that plays thisI like games that allow my children to play by themselves with each other or with me
