Description

At the Rainbow Resource Center's nationally acclaimed (well, maybe that's a little bit of a stretch!) company Christmas party, the crew is divided into teams and pitted against each other in a (friendly?) rivalry based around several of our own products. One of the challenges in past years has been a paper airplane competition. Those of us who are lucky enough to have attended one of these celebrations realize that none of the Rainbow competitors have ever read this book. If they had, a score of a few yards would not have won the competition this year, and much embarrassment over other quirky flights would have been saved. This book shares the story of the man who made it into the 1985 Guinness Book of World Records for longest flight duration of a paper airplane. He then went on to break his own record in 1989 and then again in 1994. This man is serious about flying paper airplanes, and after telling his story the book explains the physics and aerodynamics behind paper planes. It also shows how different models fly differently and the best throwing techniques and places to fly. There is then a section on competitive flying, which explains how to organize a contest including location, event categories, construction of event planes, and rules for throwing. The rest of the book provides instructions and actual paper to make planes out of. The glossy papers include dotted lines to indicate fold lines and colorful decals and sporty designs. Enough pages are included to make several models of each of the sixteen different plane designs. Instructions are included for every plane, so users can fold each airplane to reach its maximum flying potential. The instructions are numbered with black and white drawings to illustrate the procedure and adjustments you can make if your plane flies differently than you would like. The different plane designs featured in this book include the basic square plane, the basic dart, the stunt plane, the interceptor, the hornet, the vortex, and the world record plane which has held the world record since 1983. A flight log is also included in the book, which provides space for recording throwing dates, airplane type, location, time aloft, distance, and other remarks. For those more serious about paper airplanes than our own staff. ~ Rachel S.
