Description

Almost everyone knows that Jews and Arabs in the Middle East do not get along. This enlightening book shows the history and politics between the two peoples that is the cause of this unrest. Written by Tony McAleavy, the book is broken into two sections, the first highlighting the emergence of the Jewish state and showing where conflict originated, and the second describing important aspects of the conflict since 1967. The conflict today is summarized, and the Jews relationship to Palestine (from Biblical to modern times) is covered. The rise of Zionism, Hitler's effect on the situation, wars between the groups, peace agreements, the involvement of other nations, and so much more is covered. The coverage is mostly unbiased, with a slight sympathy for the Jews' position coming through occasionally. Background briefings are given, along with maps and plenty of photographs so readers will understand this long-standing clash. Text is formatted in double columns, with plenty of pictures on each page to illustrate the topic. Discussion questions are asked after each section, making sure readers get the main points of the information. Harder activity questions are also included occasionally, prompting readers to really dissect the information to gain a deeper understanding of the conflict. The book is straightforward and simple enough for younger students to comprehend the reasons behind the conflict, but also gives adults insights into the history and politics. 64 pgs, pb. ~ Rachel
