Maxscholar Phonics/Reading K-2

Description

MaxScholar is an online Orton-Gillingham ELA program. These various skills workbooks support the lessons for PK-2nd grade. The books are consumable and specific, allowing a parent/teacher to target reinforcement and practice as needed for a particular student. These are not an essential component to online learning. Online access sold separately.*

At this level, all topics have both a Teacher’s Manual and Student Workbook.

Teacher’s Manuals explain how to coordinate the books with the online instruction. These would be particularly helpful to a parent who is not thoroughly versed in the O-G method. Lessons are laid out nicely and are user-friendly. Spiral-bound, not reproducible.

Student Workbooks are black and white and designed to not be overwhelming. There are grayscale illustrations, and you might see references to resources found in the back of the book. You are also encouraged to make your own flashcards.

*There are 3 subscription options for 1 year of online access:

  • Early Start is for Pre-K, working on letters, sounds, and simple phonics skills (Item 029736)
  • The K-2-only option adds reading instruction (Item 029780)
  • Maxguru K-12 includes phonics and reading plus additional English/Language Arts skills such as syllabication, spelling rules, prefixes, suffixes, word roots, etc. (Item 029725)

Teaching Method
Traditional

A methodology based on the work of a 19th century educator who maintained that children learn best from literature (Living Books), not textbooks.

A methodology based on the Latin Trivium (three stages of learning), including the grammar stage (memorization and facts), logic stage (critical thinking), and rhetoric stage (developing/defending ideas).
Unit Study
A thematic or topical approach centered around one topic that integrates multiple subject areas.
Montessori (Discovery)
A methodology based on the work of a 20th century educator that emphasizes student and sensory-driven discovery learning and real-life applications.
