Category Description for LLATL Blue Program (3rd Ed.) - Grade 1

The Blue Program (K-1) covers beginning and intermediate phonics. It begins with readiness lessons, and then teaches short vowels, consonant blends and short vowels, and long vowels. Along with the phonics instruction, lessons cover vocabulary development, sequencing, comprehension skills, thinking skills, spelling, handwriting instruction using a unique “natural common sense” model, and an introduction to grammar. Three sets of practice readers are integral to the program: short vowel readers, bridge readers, and long vowel readers. Additional read aloud books are recommended from a variety of beloved children’s authors. The titles may be available at your local library. For your convenience, we offer these tiles in a separate, Read Aloud Library Package

The Blue Program Set includes Teacher Book, Student Book, three sets of Readers, and Materials Packet. Materials Packet is non-consumable and contains letter/word cards and cardstock letter dice. Components are also available separately.

Thirteen popular children’s books make up the Read-Aloud Library. These are separate from the phonics readers and are used for the literature part of the program. You can purchase them in a set with the Blue Program, purchase titles individually, or source them at your local library.

E-book versions of the Blue Program Teacher Book, the Student Book and the Materials Packet are also available. In 1-2 business days after the order is processed, the publisher will send an email with information on how to access the files. Once the email is sent, you have 14 days to download the material. Once downloaded, they never expire from the customer's computer and can be read and printed from any device.

The curriculum is quite complete. It has everything needed to teach and guides you in an understandable way. I like the fact that the student book is consumable with activities that go along with the books. I was originally considering Five in A Row (I love the concept and the literature) however I did not have the time to put together and plan everything needed for the lessons so I chose Learning Language Arts through Literature because it offered more daily instruction.

Excellent!
We like the blue program, too. My daughter is whizzing through it and has liked doing school with the program. I like the set and RRC offers a great deal on the set!

Great!
I love the approach and so does my daughter. She enjoys learning instead of fighting me to do the lessons. My other daughters enjoy joining in on stories as well. I'm so glad we found this! It has definitely been a blessing to this family.

Why did you choose this?

I'm looking for something with a lot of actual reading for my daughter who will be a first grader next year. It doesn't make sense to have a language arts curriculum with as little reading/books as…

I am a frequent visitor of Cathy Duffy's website and read her take on this curriculum. I also visited the LLATL website. I liked the samples I saw for each grade level and think that this curriculum…

I wanted to have a literature based program that I could then build on.

The reviews seemed like it would be a good curriculum for an active learner.
