Publisher's Description of Handwriting Without Tears Pre-K Readiness & Writing Deluxe Kit

  • Developmentally appropriate lessons promote quick success.
  • Multisensory teaching addresses all learning styles.
  • Innovative letter order promotes easy learning.
  • Unique physical approach builds good writing habits

The Get Set for School program is the high quality program you would expect from Handwriting Without Tears. This program was designed specifically for the preschool years, and uses the fun methods you would expect for that age. This program employs a unique, multisensory approach which prepares children to write. Children will play, build, sing, color and learn while developing important skills. Readiness & Writing Pre-K Teacher's Guide, now in its 8th edition, provides everything you need to understand the program and developmental stages to effectively teach the lessons. Topically, children learn the alphabet, letter and number recognition and formation, counting, shapes, colors and drawing. The writing focus is on uppercase letters, while lowercase letters are taught toward the end of the year (beginning in Week 30) using the My First Lowercase Book. Complete explanations are given on how to use the suggested manipulatives. Lessons are easy to use and there is a suggested 36 week schedule found in the front of the book. Crayon skills are developed while using special pages for scribbling and coloring. Strokes are practiced on "Mat Man" before ever making a letter. Capital letters and numbers are then practiced using a crayon. There are also extra activity pages which check readiness skills.

I Know My Numbers is a set of 10 small horizontal booklets (14 pgs ea), each centered on a number 1-10 that a student methodically works through as they practice writing and understanding these numbers. They are full of charming black and white illustrations and clear instruction. Little Chalk Bits is a good sized box (about 6.5"x 4"x 2) full of 1 pieces of thin (1cm) white chalk. This will go a long way! Little Sponge Cubes is a set of 100 (50 yellow/50 blue) small cubes (1cm) of kitchen sponge. Just right for tiny fingers to erase with!

This is a wonderful introduction to the world of handwriting for the preschool child. We offer several packages with both the most essential and also with recommended items for the program to fit your budget.

A follow up book to preschool is Kick Start Kindergarten, which reviews upper and lowercase letters, or the Kindergarten program, Letters and Numbers for Me.

Amazing
Bought this for my daughter that is turning 4 years old (also autistic) and it’s been amazing! Love how they simplify it in building their writing skills. She is already starting to write her name clearly. The songs are fun and activities are great.

Love it for special needs child
This product has been wonderful for our 4 year old child with developmental delays. Combining lots of music and tactile stimulation, it teaches in a slow but progressive way that keeps her engaged. My only criticism of the product is that the teaching manual is not organized in the most inuitive way; there's a lot of flipping pages rather than the lessons being organized in a daily lesson order. Overall, it is great in helping with letter recognition and formation. Highly recommend, especially for kiddos with learning challenges.

Why did you choose this?

I did not enforce neat and careful handwriting with my older three, so with my fourth, I would like to introduce mastery and good hand strength early on. This set seems to introduce proper…

I have seen this program used in schools before and love how it breaks down the method of teaching the kids how to write and recognize letters

cost

Best ever basis for an entire curriculum build around manipulatives, and stressing the most important pre-reading, pre-writing, and pre-math skills, imo and experience. I want it for my…

Does this come with access to the new digital interactive support tool that LWOT released?

Our sets do not include the digital content. Perhaps this is an option available to schools?

How much overlap in the HWOT kindergarten kit is there with the pre-K kit? Would I need to start with the pre-K bundle, or is this an appropriate entry-point into the program?

I would say that depends on the skill level of the students. The pre-K kit starts with vocabulary of letter formation and basic structure and then builds from there. If your students know basic letter formation (start at the top, big line down, little curve, little curve) then you could skip the pre-K.
