Category Description for My Printing Book (Grade 1)

Building on the previous courses, My Printing reviews capital letters and numbers but primarily focuses on the correct use of lowercase letters in words and sentences. Activity pages combine handwriting instruction with other language arts lessons and children are given the opportunity to practice on different styles of lines. There are fewer manipulatives used at Grade 1, although the chalkboard, chalk bits, and sponge cubes are still used in these lessons.

Some great materials here
I am using portions of Handwriting Without Tears, but not the full program. I got it because I thought my kids needed more work on printing. We LOVE the chalkboard, little chalks, and the little sponges. It really encourages the kids to print their letters. We are not using other parts of the program because it teaches the letters are much more narrow than most programs and I don't want to confuse my kiddos.

My son is starting first grade and struggling with handwriting. I’m considering starting this curriculum. Should I start with Kindergarten or use first grade?

It may depend on the degree of fine motor controll that your son has. If it is minimal, then you may want to start with the K level which has larger lines and less work. You may also want to consider how many years you think your son may need to practice manuscript before being ready to move into cursive. Starting with the K level will give you an extra year (K, 1, and 2) before the cursive instruction begins.
