Publisher's Description of First Start Reading Complete Package

Is there really a need for another phonics program? Well, we thought so! The first reading and printing lessons are critical, and although there are many adequate programs out there, we could not find one with the right combination we were looking fora balanced, age-appropriate approach to phonics and reading, and a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. In addition, many phonics programs today use the ladder approach (consonant-vowel blending), which is fine, but we prefer the more traditional (vowel-consonant) approach combined with word families. And one more thing: mastery of the short vowels is the sine qua non of phonics programs, and few programs really give adequate practice in this very important skill. First Start Reading solved all of our little problems and made us happy. We hope you like it too.

First Start Reading Book E continues the FSR phonics program students complete in kindergarten. Book E picks up where kindergarten leaves off, covering long vowel teams, soft c and g, and three sounds of y. Once the student has mastered the basic phonics in the FSR series, he is ready to continue reading progress with real literature. Book E is the perfect program to solidify phonics knowledge before moving intoStoryTime Treasures. It contains 8lessons, each focusing on a more difficult phonics concept and each including a story that gives students practice reading the concept.

First Start Reading covers consonants, short and long vowels, 45 common words, and manuscript printing, accompanied by artist-drawn coloring pictures and drawing pages for every letter. Your child will begin reading in the very first lesson as he progresses through fivestudent books and over thirty-one phonetic stories, such as Hogs and Pigs and Jog to the Jet. TheTeacher Manuals guide you through the program and provide helpful assessments and teaching tips.

This set includes the following:First Start Reading Books A-E and the two Teacher Guides for all the student books.

Category Description for First Start Reading

First Start Reading by Memoria Press is a traditional and uncomplicated approach to phonics with an emphasis on vowel-consonant/word-families phonics and a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. In a day and age when penmanship is often ignored, they've chosen to make it a central part of their approach to reading using it as a kinesthetic reinforcement activity. This program covers consonants, short and long vowels, and at least 45 common words and manuscript printing. The entire program consists of five Student Worktexts (A-E) and two Teacher's Guide, which make up the Complete Set below. The worktexts are 70 - 108 pages each and contain half letter presentation, blending, and reading practice and half writing practice space. Black and white line art drawings are also included to color. First Start Book E provides more reading practice and advanced phonics, and functions as preparation for transitioning into StoryTime Treasures, Memoria Press' first grade reading/literature guides. Each of the eight lessons focuses on a particular phonics concept and each includes a story. The Teacher's Guides starts with an introduction that covers all the basics and equips you with the information needed to teach the program effectively. The lesson plans include general information for the teacher as well as scripted instructions for the student.

After completing this program, Memoria Press suggests continuing reading progress with real literature or their StoryTime Treasures literature program. Traditional Spelling by Memoria Press will also provide continued phonetic practice.

Easy to use and teach
Wonderful way to teach kids to read. I’ve been using it for two weeks now. I do not have experience with homeschooling and I love how this is so self explanatory. I like that it tells the teacher exactly what to say.

Loving this program!
Let me first begin by saying that in Kindergarten I used 100 Easy Lessons and my DD completed it and is reading very well. But after, I had felt that she needed (and been advised to use) a good phonics program to round out the need for learning each phonics rule more thoroughly and to practice writing and spelling. I did start another program which felt totally chaotic (lessons did not have consistent length and were jumping all over the language arts map).

I had discovered the Word Mastery course, leading me to Classical Phonics (which is a remake of Word Mastery), and then to First Start Reading.

Imagine my relief when I discovered First Start Reading. Two pages per lesson, consistent format of instruction, straightforward and engaging. It's like coming home. It's so well put together. DD enjoys it very much. And there is just enough writing without overwhelming her.

If you are looking for a phonics program, this one is amazing. You don't have to have separate books for phonics, reading, spelling, writing, and a super gentle introduction to basic grammar. It's all in here in these gorgeous little books.

Why did you choose this?

excited, new to homeschooling. Will be my second year and this looks like a very useful and comprehensive way to reinforce beginning reading with my daughter who who is beginning kindergarten.

This program looks promising. I wish to review this set with the possibility of purchasing enough for the primary grades at my school.

I have used it before with a child. I gave it away and now need it again.

Seems to have all components needed both to teach, engage, and entertain at kindergarten level. I like that the stories are intertwined in the instruction. Complete program without being overkill or…

Does this include lesson plans?

I actually emailed the company after using this program for a year because I was perplexed at the pacing of it - it seemed to dramatically speed up toward the end. They responded that lesson plans are available for purchase separately. So, they may not be strictly necessary, but could be helpful if you, like me, have never taught a phonics program before. :) Overall I really love First Start Reading and definitely recommend it!

Does this include the new edition of Book D?

At this time, it will not be the 2nd edition of Book D. We will have them soon though!

Why does this cost so much when you can add the same 5 books to your cart separately and it only costs $38?

This package has been recently revised (to comply with changes made by Memoria Press) and now includes three additional books. Our graphic has not caught up, yet. Also included in the package are: Book E (#037828), Book E Teacher Manual (#037782), and the Kindergarten Phonics Lesson Plans (#056834).
