Ctcmath

Description

A recipient of many awards and a favorite online math program among many homeschoolers, we are happy to offer CTCMath as a single student or family 12-month membership option! For grades K-12, this program was created by Pat Murray, a former high school teacher from Australia and homeschool dad of ten. He delivers the math lessons in short 4 to 9 minute videos that are visually appealing, easy to listen to, and in a sequential format. If you are looking for an online program that allows students to work at their own pace, promotes independent learning, and includes automatic grading and weekly parent reports, this might be a math curriculum you will want to check out!

After purchasing, customers receive an email with activation instructions. Subscription begins when activated. Parents create a separate account for themselves (the parent) and the student or students (depending on if you purchase a single or family membership). Several video tutorials are available to show you all the functions that are accessible to you; however, set up and navigation of the program is fairly intuitive.

There are so many options for parents to be involved behind the scenes to ensure your student is mastering topics and progressing nicely. Parents will want to begin by creating a course plan that shows how many lessons and weeks each grade level offers. You can set the program to automatically generate lessons for the year or customize a plan specifically for your student. Other parent perks allow you to choose if your student does the interactive questions or worksheets (when available) or both. You can also choose if you want your student to reach a certain passing grade and how many attempts you want them to try before seeing the solution. You can create exams, customize question banks, assign weekly revision tasks for review, and much more! There is also a weekly detailed progress report emailed to you to help you keep track of progress. Parents have access to all the solutions.

Each grade level is organized by strands (an overall math concept, such as measurement), topics (topics within the concept, such as time) and lessons (specific lessons related to each topic, such as units of time). There is not an overall placement test. Students can begin at their grade level, or, if a student is coming in from another program, helpful diagnostic tests are available for each topic from Kindergarten through Algebra II. Diagnostic tests come in three forms: short, standard, or comprehensive. The author suggests beginning a grade below and doing the diagnostic tests to make sure there are no gaps before starting at grade level, which is generally more concise than an overall placement test. These tests can also be used when the student begins or finishes a new topic.

Students begin a lesson by listening to the video and then answering the interactive questions. After the initial set of questions is completed, more questions are available if needed. A lesson summary can also be printed. An audio feature allows the student to listen to each question instead of reading it (very helpful for a struggling reader). Another wonderful feature of this program is its ability to adapt the questions for each student. When the student is answering the questions correctly, the questions get more difficult. However, if the student is struggling, it moves back to easier questions. This makes it so malleable for struggling, average, or advanced students! Some activities include an option for interactive online questions and/or a printed worksheet. If completing a printed worksheet, students can enter their answers through multiple choice options on the computer. Students should have a notebook handy to work out their solutions. As students work through the questions, they love the “mastery level” stars they earn as they continue to show mastery in their lessons!

This program has a lot to offer homeschool families, giving you access to beginning math through calculus. The family membership adds flexibility to your homeschooling, allowing you to use it as a core curriculum for all your children or a supplement for some of them. CTCMath works on all HTML5 platforms including iOS devices (iPads, iPhones, and Android). ~ Gina
